Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Animals sniff, nuzzle, and peer into the camera, giving youngsters the impression that the creatures are sniffing, nuzzling, and peering at them. (Hence the title.) Hosted by "Joe the Dog" (voiced by Ed Asner), this program takes toddlers and preschoolers on a trip through the San Francisco and Oakland zoos, Northern California farms, the dog section of Golden Gate Park, and the beach. On the way, the little ones meet warthogs and meerkats, penguins and gorillas, a host of farm animals and, of course, many dogs. Cartoon leaves, grass, and fruit appear onscreen from time to time, which the children are supposed to "feed" to the animals. Meanwhile Joe offers the occasional factoid. It's a fun ride for the little ones, but children 5 and up will probably find it juvenile. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Product Description
NAPPA 2002 Gold Award winner for excellence in children's videos Fun New Children's Video Puts Kids Nose-To-Nose and Eye-To-Eye With Animals As Never Before

"Oh I'm SO hungry! Please feed me some grass!" a drooling cow says to your child. Within seconds, the cow's entire nose fills the TV screen as she "eats" right out of the palm of your child's hand.

In this entertaining and educational new children's video, real animals get up close and personal as never before. Gorillas talk to you. Elephants sing you. Dogs sniff you. In this first-of-its-kind production, there's even a chance to "feed" hungry animals!

"It's almost as if all these animals are right there in your living room, only you don't have to clean up after them," says producer Maria Goodavage.

Here's Looking at You, Kid! is hosted by Joe the Dog (whose voice is played by Ed Asner), an Airedale who has a busy day visiting dozens of animals as he ventures from the jungle to the farm to a huge dog park where all his pooch pals run free.

Children ages 2 and up are sure to enjoy this fun-filled video that allows them to interact with some of the world's friendliest critters. Children laugh as they learn all kinds of fun and interesting facts about animals. (Their parents do, too.) With lively music, and a wild and wonderful cast of characters, Here's Looking at You, Kid! is bound to become your child's favorite creature feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our grandkids love it, September 22, 2001
We got this video for our three grandchildren, 2,4, and 8 because they love animals. Every time they come over, they ask if they can watch "the Joe video". It's a very funny video, and everytime we watch it we learn something new. I love the humor, and the kids think it's hilarious. Even the 8 year old, who is getting in the "cool" stage, enjoys it. We're going to get a copy for them to take home with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and educational!, September 20, 2001
By Pam Hill (Rochester, NY) - See all my reviews
This video is so much fun for little kids. My twins (age 4) race to the TV to try to get sniffed by the animals. They feed the animals and afterward they often spend the next hour pretending they are the animals in the video. They come home from preschool and I let them watch one movie before dinner. We've only had this one for two weeks since school started, but they've asked for this one more than half the time, and they always want to see it again. [My son's] favorite is the winking llama. [My daughter's] favorite is the gentle "rapping" dancing English elephant. She knows every word and sings it at dinner. I like the silly goose. There's something for everyone in this tape!

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome relief from usual mindless videos, October 25, 2001
By Maggie McClure (Boca Raton, Florida) - See all my reviews
Hooray--finally, here's a children's video I don't want to hide away after viewing it for the 5th time. Cleverly written, the narration appeals to adults with some humorous references that only grown-ups understand. Meanwhile, it entertains kids in a novel way: It encourages them to touch the TV screen and pretend to feed the animals (whose big, close-up faces mesmerize tykes, I notice). So I must agree with the quote on the video cover taken from a San Francisco KRON-TV reviewer. He said: "I've never seen anything like it."
A big surprise for me was hearing veteran actor Ed Asner's upbeat, happy-tinged voice as Joe the Dog. What a difference from his booming, assertive voice as the cranky -- albeit loveable -- boss on "Mary Tyler Moore."
