Product Description

This is the second edition of the popular romantic guide to New York City. Marilyn Appleberg's ROMANTIC N.Y. is a simple, clear, yet evocative guide to what makes New York so unique, so magical. In addition to being the definitive guide to what lovers want most -- dazzling views; picnic places; fireside dining; secret gardens, and romantic excursions on water-- the book pays homage to the romantic nature of the city itself. In chapters such as "New York State of Mind," "Romance of the Past," and "Island Hopping," it gives New Yorkers fresh ways to look at and celebrate the city they may be taking for granted. It 's the best of New York in every season, in love or not. That's why ROMANTIC N.Y. is not for lovers only.

The more than 165 places featured in the book do not leave New York City's borders, because that is the challenge and the gift-to find the romance of the city and weave it into your everyday existence. Once you begin, you will wonder how all of the enchantment ever eluded you. That's why ROMANTIC N.Y. is most certainly not for Valentine's Day only. It is a Baedeker of bests, a handy reference for all who love this city, and a gentle reminder that there's more to life than take out and a video.

From the Author

Following the publication of my first book, the I LOVE NEW YORK GUIDE, the most comprehensive guidebook ever done to the city, I found the one question that arose again and again was "where is a romantic place...? It seemed to be the one area where people would draw a blank when they needed to be imaginative. The popularity of the course I taught at the Learning Annex on romantic and unusual things to do in the city, confirmed my suspicion that this was an area where people needed help. When the first edition of ROMANTIC N.Y. was published in 1996, the primary reaction it elicited from people was "what a good idea!" -- as if it were a work of fiction. Happily it is not. Everything featured in the book exists within the five boroughs, are all highly accessible, and most are highly affordable. For savvy New Yorkers it serves as an aide memoir, reminding them of places they may have forgotten in the rushed pace of life in the fast lane of the fastest town. But it's more than a book of romantic restaurants and bars, and it's more than a book for lovers. Primarily, it's a wonderful reminder of what all the fuss is about. ROMANTIC N.Y. celebrates the city itself, and even if like me you're a native, you will still find places that can amaze and delight. And if you are also in love in this wonderful town -- well, how lucky can you get.

4.0 out of 5 stars a new york minute, August 1, 2000
By thomas p. roche (Ridgefield Park, N. J.) - See all my reviews
Only someone born in new york, who loves new york, could write such a book. It's a very updated collection of the most romantic places in new york. If you're looking for a spot for the intimate dinner for two, it's here. If you need to know where the most romantic settings are, it's here...and on and on it goes. The format is simple to locate something "in a new york minute". I have used the book a half dozen times already and scored a 10 on each occasion. Ms. Appleberg's descriptions are romantic themselves and paint a vivid picture of what you will find. Finding a restaurant in new york that has a fireplace already has me thinking of the Fall/Winter scenes that we New Yorker's love so much. You know that New Yorker's love a bargain...this is one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential book for New Yorkers and visitors, August 5, 2001
By Joseph A. Dweck (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
Tired of the same old places?, Don't know where to go for something really different? This book has tips and recommendations that I couldn't find in 10 lifetimes. It is ESSENTIAL for anyone who lives in and enjoys New York, as well as anyone visiting for any period of time. The author includes terrific, romantic lunch spots, museum cafes, great places to impress a date, ideas for dates when you don't know where to go. She tells the best things to order, or to pass up. I recommend it heartily.
