Editorial Reviews

Review

"The skill with which Cording works, the subtle plainness and directness of his writing, opens the poems unconstrictedly to a wide range of emotions... sometimes registering experiences of unexpected joy." (David Ferry )

Product Description

The title poem takes its name from a passage by Simone Weil, "We must not weep so that we may not be comforted." But in this and other poems, Robert Cording offers a more hopeful vision of our ability to find consolation in the world we inhabit--a world endowed will offer endless spiritual possibilities, both in nature and within ourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A triumph of the moral imagination, October 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Against Consolation (Paperback)
This is one of the most compelling books of poetry I've read in a long time. Robert Cording's work is an unrelenting exploration of what it means to be human. Cording's poetry has always aimed at writing psalms for our time: fittingly, he allows both faith and doubt their full scope. There is an intensity in these poems that does not let up for a moment:
everything is at stake in this rich and provocative book.
