Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Dendy, a former teacher and mental health counselor, collaborated with her son, who was diagnosed with ADD as a child, to produce this "survival guide" to help kids with attention deficit cope with life. The book introduces 12 young people (ranging in age from 12 to 18) and describes their struggles with ADD/ADHD issues. Chapter two deals with 13 common challenges of these disorders (e.g., disorganization, impulsivity, inattention, procrastination) and includes advice from the teens. Next, the authors move to potential hot-button issues, including schools and IEPs, medication, driving, and friendships. The appendixes are chock-full of easy-to-understand information about how the brain works, the difference between the two conditions, and strategies for success in school. Black-and-white photos of the teen contributors and computer-generated cartoons appear throughout. This is a pick-it-up, read-a-bit, and set-it-down kind of nonfiction, and the text is to the point and list filled. A very practical resource.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA
