"Many dishes for the major Jewish holidays, including a comprehensive selection of recipes for Passover." -- Connecticut Jewish Ledger

"Meals for the lips, not the hips." -- Montreal Gazette

"Ms. Gilletz cleverly combines both good health and superb taste..." -- Baltimore Jewish Times

"What should Americans eat to stay healthy? Recipes from Norene Gilletz's 'MealLeaniYumm!' (will) help you find some tasty answers." -- Judy Baumann, Rd, LD, Washtenaw Jewish News

...packed full of excellent ideas for the cook who keeps kosher and is interested in preparing low-fat meals. I recommend this book for all serious cooks." -- Association of Jewish Libraries - AJL Newsletter

..Holiday feasts are traditionally rich and heavy, but a quick glance through the fact-filled, 800-recipe book was enough to tell me that it contained scores, or more, of uncomplicated, tantalizing dishes to make in minutes. And as an irresistible New Year dietary bonus, the subtitle notes "all that's missing is the fat."

Ms. Gilletz cleverly combines both good health and superb taste in MealLeaniYumm! between the snappy, bright covers. Written in a breezy conversational manner, Ms. Gilletz addresses everything from the why's and how's of nutritional analysis; Things you Want to Know covers 22 pages, Good Foods, Bad Foods (there's no such thing as all bad), How to Shop, How to Figure out the Labels, Staples and Perishables and What's a Serving..

MealLeaniYumm! is an indispensable food guide for cooks of every level. It answers all kitchen queries. -- Baltimore Jewish Times, Ethel Hofman

A bouquet garni to Norene Gilletz...She certainly has turned out a cookbook with lean recipes. They come complete with nutritional analysis, lots of ideas for variations and in some cases, lactose-free variations. There is a good meatless section with a directory of vegetarian terms, a whack of bean dish ideas and helpful suggestions to balance the proper nutrients in a vegetarian diet..

You may think you know all the low-fat strategies, but you'll probably find new ones in her two pages of nutrition tips and strategies.

Jewish cooks will enjoy her sections on festive holiday tables and Passover pleasures. She shares her secret ingredient for Low-Fat Matzo Balls. Well, all right, it's club soda. And did you know that cola makes Coke Brisket very tender!

No doubt about it, MealLeaniYumm! is an energy-filled and positive low-fat cookbook. Gilletz could have also called it Oy, the Joy of Low-Fat Cooking. -- Hamilton Spectator, Suzanne Bourret

MealLeaniYumm! is a Kosher low-fat cookbook and an excellent resource for cardiac patients, as well as anyone with weight and health concerns and (who) wishes to follow Kosher dietary guidelines. From Mushroom Barley Soup, New Wave Gefilte Fish and Sweet & Sour Stuffed Peppers, to Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie, Pesto Pasta Salad and Rozie's Magical Carrot Muffins, MealLeaniYumm! offers up more than 800 delicious, nutritious, low-fat, kosher recipes that will grace any table and please any palate. -- Midwest Book Review, Reviewer's Bookwatch

5.0 out of 5 stars Superyummy!, February 6, 2002
I recently received this cookbook as a gift. I have two other Norene Gilletz cookbooks. Although I have 30-40 cookbooks on my shelf, I have to say that this cookbook is something special. The recipes are a combination of traditional Jewish with more modern, almost California-style tastes. What makes the book special is its presentation. Each recipe is not only explained very clearly, there is an descriptive introduction to each one (e.g. says it's a favorite of her students/caterees), there are a number of notes offering tips, or replacement items. Also, she tells us which recipe can be frozen. Most importantly, the tips allow a nonprofessional cook to gradually learn how to be flexible in her/his cooking abilities, experimenting with different forms of the same recipe.

5.0 out of 5 stars As a dietitian/nutritionist, I recommend THIS cookbook!, November 6, 2000
By Marilyn Rabin (Montréal, Québec (CANADA)) - See all my reviews
Meal Lean i Yumm! is more than just another cookbook with the fat removed. It is a superb resource for health professionals who have been searching for the ultimate way to assist their clientèle in implementing both basic and advanced nutrition care recommendations. The solution to many nutritionally related diseases is with just the right combination of ingredients found in Norene's delicious contemporary and traditionally based recipes. Foods you may have been reluctant to try, such as tofu and quinoa, will now be part of your regular menu. This book has so much to offer: 1) it promotes a variety of ingredients that are easily available and affordable, 2) it provides scientifically sound information about food and nutrition and advocates moderation rather than radical means of reducing the fat content in our daily diet. A generous number of menu planning ideas compliments practically every recipe. This book is a blend of motivation and education with the support of 800 superb recipes. Norene's style makes it so easy to modify your eating habits and feel terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great cookbook from Norene Gilletz, March 29, 2000
By K. Guttman (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
Once again Gilletz creates a cookbook with recipes that I will use over and over again, even though I was a bit of a sceptic when I first saw her new book. After being a fan of Norene's cookbooks for years, I wasn't sure how I would like her new "lowfat, healthy style". With a subtitle reading "All That's Missing is the Fat", I said to myself, how could it be any good without fat? Well I am here to tell you that her new cookbook is filled with appealing and creative recipes that really do taste great. Suddening I am not only enjoying delicious food, but feel good that I am eating well and eating healthier - and I don't feel as if I am depriving myself. Be prepared to literally start drooling when you begin reading this book. Recipes like "Roxie's Portobello Mushroom Burgers", Lemon Dill Chicken In A Pouch, Sesame Salmon, and Blueberry Apple Phyllo Pie will have your mouth watering with anticipation. Besides all the delicious recipes there are hundreds of great tips and ideas on how to begin healthier habits. Those tips, suggestions and sage advice add incredible value to this book. Norene, if you are reading this, be assured I will never doubt you again. You are the "Cookbook Queen"!
