A ROCKCLIMBER’S GUIDE TO THE ALABAMA HILLS

By Michael Strassman
Published by Range of Light Productions

A Guide to Califonia's newest climbing area, this beautiful high desert location should see a lot of traffic due to its relative proximity to the west’s major metropolitan areas and a recent write-up in Rock and Ice Magazine. Situated in Lone Pine, CA at the foot of Mt. Whitney, the Alabama Hills are 3 – 4 hours from Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Also a famous movie location, the Hills feature over 200 climbing routes from sport climbs to cracks. Most climbs are moderates within the 5.9 – 5.10 range, although more difficult climbs are being ascended all the time. The majority of the climbs are within a five-minute walk from the car. Situated at 4500 feet, The Hills are climbable year round, even in the summer because the majority of the crags face north. The town of Lone Pine is only five minutes away with all the amenities. Five campgrounds are also within a few miles radius. The book has detailed maps, topos and overviews to easily get climbers to the crags. 8 3/8” X 5 3/8”, 80 pages, Perfect Bound, UV coated color cover. Retail $14.95.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine Guide, September 3, 2005
By Emil Coyajee (Pasadena, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This guide to the Alabama Hills is a climbing guide as good as can be.
First, it includes a lot of routes in the area. Second, the drawings indicating route locations are clear and abundant, and the route beta is accurate (e.g. number of bolts). There was just one route we could not find in our first weekend at the A. Hills (Magic Pig, Cattle Pocket). Third, the guide not only rates the difficulty of the routes (i.e. 5.xx), it also rates the quality of the rock, using a 3-star rating system. Last but not least, like many CA climbing guides, the guide provides some history of the development of the area.
Concluding, this guide provided an excellent means to enjoy one of the few bolted climbing areas in Southern California.
