Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School - In Book Report, Shaw provides straightforward, practical advice for writers and poets of all genres. He stresses the importance of maintaining a regular writing schedule and producing good work through editing and revisions. He warns about scams and discusses effective query letters and book proposals. One chapter is devoted to handling rejection. Legal advice and a useful list of recommended titles are included. In Grammar, the author points out that editors and agents generally won't consider reading a manuscript that is full of basic errors in grammar and punctuation even if the content is otherwise excellent. In an accessible style, he talks about streamlining writing for clarity and effectiveness. He explains grammar and punctuation rules in a question-and-answer format and provides examples. One chapter is devoted to proper punctuation and line breaks for different forms of poetry. Writing samples from well-known authors and poets are included. Poetry walks aspiring poets through the writing process from initial ideas and first drafts to feedback from others, revisions, publication, and book promotion. The authors discuss how poetry differs from prose and provide exercises to get readers started. An interview with Walker as well as biographical sketches and poetry samples of three other poets are included. The authors explain the advantages and disadvantages of alternatives to traditional publishing, including print-on-demand, vanity, subsidy, and E-book publishing. This guide will inspire teen poets to pursue their writing with renewed passion. Three excellent texts for creative-writing courses. - Joyce Fay Fletcher, Rippon Middle School, Prince William County, VA
