Product Description

You've asked for it, and you got it: an advanced Bryan Kest routine. We all like the physical challenge that Bryan provides within the context of yoga. Practice working at your edge while maintaining a healthy approach to your practice. This is the third in a series of live recordings just made available to the general public. The recording is of one of Bryan's 90 minute classes at his very popular Santa Monica, CA studio, in audio CD format accompanied by a beautiful, 8" x 8" spiral bound instructional booklet. (Like the other titles in the series, the spiral binding makes it easy to keep the book open and follow along.) The audio CD is segmented into 18 tracks for easy repeating or forwarding. The booklet has over 100 photographed asanas (positions) that track the recording, along with detailed written instruction for key poses provided by Bryan. A nice treat: Bryan Kest is one of the two models photographed for the asanas.

In addition to being an excellent, complete yoga routine for your library, the CDs are a compact format perfect for travelers.

About the Author

Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga for more than 23 years, starting in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Bryan has been teaching yoga for 18 years. He founded and teaches at two successful yoga studios, one in Santa Monica and one in Calabasas, CA, and is regularly invited by other yoga studios around the world to hold workshops. Bryan also hosts group yoga retreats in places such as Maui and Peru, has created several videos, audio CDs and booklets, and personally teaches an extensive instructor training program.

5.0 out of 5 stars new places cooking..., April 29, 2003
I am well acquainted with the videos and DVD's of Bryan Kest and he is one of my favorite yoga teachers. His style is very warm and relaxing, not uptight. He concentrates in this CD on the breathing first and foremost, then the poses, stressing that you should follow what your own body needs and can do. That said, this is a really good, intense workout that makes muscles sore that you didn't even know that you had. I am not usually one to do ninety minutes of working out on a regular basis, but the time goes fast in this workout. None of the poses are especially difficult to do, although there are a few that I did in the modified format. Advanced power yoga refers, as Bryan says, to your body awareness. I am aware of mine - it is still sore! (but in a good way!) The workout leaves you relaxed yet invigorated and I feel that I can concentrate easier on the poses in this audio only format where I am not distracted with someone else's form. Another interesting aside is that this CD recording is of an actual class - you can hear Bryan interacting with the students, helping with poses, you can even hear the bus go by outside once or twice! It feels as if you are there ---and I find that his narrative is comforting, but also humorous sometimes and helps break up any tension you might be feeling going into the pose. A welcome Workout to anyone's collection.
Namaste.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Ohhhh Yeaaahhhhh! ", November 30, 2003
Yes, new places are cooking! I thought I was in good shape until I tried this one! I never did so many chaturangas in one class! Yes, my muscles are sore also!

The fact that there is no music on this CD did throw me at first, but I got used to it. Also, Brian's voice is not as soothing and melodious as Shiva Rea's or Rodney Yee's but he is quite entertaining! I also like the fact that he brings the true practice of Yoga to us in a down to earth way.

In short, I loved every minute of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, only one complaint:, March 8, 2006
By Alymom (NY -United States) - See all my reviews
This a a great CD and booklet to have in your collection if you are an intermediate to advanced student. I really like to use it together with my practice at the studio. I quite like Bryan Kest's style of teaching because he is honest about what you have to do to achieve the routine. He's very motivating for me, despite what others have said in their reviews. I wish he'd come out with more of these sets, and I'd probably buy them all if they were at this advanced level. Bryan Kest does not have a typically soothing, meditative voice, yet he brings home the meaning behind the asana: keep the focus on your breath, even during the tough poses.

My only complaint is that the CD abruptly ends, and yet there is only 15 minutes on the second CD. There is plenty of room for a nice meditation/relaxation sequence at the end of this, and I feel that its something that really SHOULD be done after investing 90 minutes in this routine. One can do it on their own, but why not have him fully complete the practice?
