Editorial Reviews

Product Description
48 black & white art prints reproduced in an 11x9 coffee-table book format, with captions. Dougert's interpretation of the legacy of hard coal mining has taken him throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania as he visited many obscure locations. This history is fast disappearing or becoming inaccessible. For example, the imposing Locust Summit Breaker included in this collection no longer exists--it was torn down in 2002.

About the Author
Author/Photographer Ed Dougert's family is from Shenandoah, Pennsylvania—the heart of the Anthracite Coal Region. Dougert has degrees in Liberal Arts and Mechanical Engineering from Temple University of Philadelphia. Published in Pennsylvania Magazine and Photo Techniques, his photos are also represented in Alex's Fine Art Gallery near Hatfield, Penna. His Spring 2002 photoessay in Schuylkill Living Magazine was a big hit with the magazine's readers and prompted him to put this collection together.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift for former Coal Crackers and Photographers, December 7, 2003
By David Cruikshank (Reading, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I received this book as a gift for my birthday. If you are a former resident of the PA Anthracite region or have any interest in Coal Mining, or Fine Art Black & White Photography I highly reccomend this book. As a professional photographer I can honestly state that Ed has recorded the once bustling Anthracite region with a caring, knowledgable, Artist eye. Having grown up in this region I know that many of the places of Historical significance are going to waste or being lost forever. This area provided the fuel for the Industrial Revolution and WW1, but now those who remember are quickly passing away. Little known Facts the Coal town of Shenandoah was once the most populated per square mile in the US, more than NYC. And the town of Port Carbon at the headwaters of the Schulkill River, was once the busiest port in the whole US, even though what remains now is more a large stream than the once bustling Schulkill Canal. A great gift for Dad, Grandpa or yourself.

Dave
