Product Description
A tale from the Brothers Grimm provides inspiration for three gifted students from the world-renowned Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Khang Le, Mike Yamada, and Felix Yoon were guided by their instructor, Scott Robertson, to create original design solutions for the environments, characters, props, and vehicles found within The Skillful Huntsman. The trio's sketches and full-color renderings thoroughly document the creative process of concept design, revealing a host of intriguing places--from sci-fi cities to castles, and people--from giants to royalty. A must for artists, aspiring entertainment designers, comic aficionados, and anyone interested in the creative process, The Skillful Huntsman offers insight into the mysterious world of the imagination. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author
KHANG LE
Khang Le was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1981. When he was ten, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, and Le immersed himself in the world of comic books. During high school, a friend introduced him to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. At the same time, The Art of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, and making a living as a concept artist for the entertainment industry become Le's aspiration. In 2000, he got accepted to Art Center, where he had the opportunity to refine his skills to freelance for various entertainment mediums, including games, movies, music videos, and publishing. He has recently graduated and is currently traveling the world and considering all of his professional options.

FELIX YOON
Felix Yoon was born in Pennsylvania in 1982, where he spent his childhood, and later relocated to South Korea. He moved to California as he entered high school. It wasn't until senior year when Yoon decided to take art seriously as a possible occupation. After high school he entered Art Center College of Design, where he graduated with honors with a BFA in illustration. He started working as a concept artist for video games and now works as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation.

MIKE YAMADA
Michael Yamada was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Originally intending to be a graphic designer, Yamada attended a local community college and changed his course of study after discovering a book of Star Wars production art. He transferred to Art Center College of Design where in 2003 he graduated with honors with a BS degree in product design with a emphasis on entertainment design. He has spent the year after his graduation employed as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation, and working on a variety of freelance projects. He also teaches at Otis College of Art and Design. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Sketchbook Essentially, October 20, 2008
Length:: 0:28 Mins

This is essentially a sketchbook. It also looks very much like a school project for art students. And the art students in particular are Khang Le, Mike Yamada and Felix Yoon.

The Skillful Huntsman is actually a story by the Brothers Grimm.

Based on the short story, the artists then came up with concept drawings for the characters, set, props and environment. As you can see in the video, there are lots of sketches on character designs. For every subject, there's comment from the artist on the thought process for the creation. And just beneath that comment is another one from the Scott Robertson, a teacher at the Art College of Design.

It's fun to see how the 3 artists interpret the stories and come up with their own unique concepts and designs.

Bear in mind that this book was published in 2005. These talented students have already gone on to work at major studios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly Good, May 29, 2006
I just bought the book today after leafing through it at a local comic book store in New York. The concept art is great. All three artists are very talented. So why shockingly good? Here's why. These guys are young- very young to be this good. Art is a function of talent, focus, and practicing the craft. It's apparent that these kids have done all three.
