Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Book for military children going through a deployment. It asks the question from a child's perspective why their daddy has gone to fight and protect other children and families. It answers in an easy to read and rhyming format.

About the Author

Anissa Contreras Mersiowsky grew up in Gilbert, Arizona, and attended Arizona State University. She graduated from ASU in 1996 and worked as an IT consultant for Accenture for five years while searching for her soul mate. She met her husband, Jeff Mersiowsky, while he was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. They were later married while he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. Soon thereafter they had their daughter, Kaitlyn. As fate would have it, Jeff was deployed to Iraq when Kaitlyn was just 2 weeks old. Anissa was the family readiness group (FRG) leader during Jeff's company command in Iraq. This book was written in anticipation of questions Kaitlyn might ask if she were able to understand that her daddy had gone to war.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great for the younger kids, April 5, 2008
This book's recurring line is, "My Daddy had to go to fight. I do not understand." on practically every page. I didn't realize that there would be so much emphasis on fighting, which we don't ever discuss with our two year old. We use phrases like, "Daddy is going to keep people safe," because I feel that is much more age appropriate and positive. This book brings up some really good questions that older kids have, but it's pretty depressing in parts, and not quite as upbeat as some of the other ones out there, like "Red, White, and Blue Goodbye" and "The Red Balloon." $10 is also a little pricey for this paperback, when there are better ones out there for less.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok, March 10, 2008
By Mom2boys (Jacksonville, NC) - See all my reviews
This book was just ok for me. I bought it after my husband deployed overseas for my 2 toddler boys. I didn't like the use of the word "War" said so many times. It seemed so depressing and mature. It might be ok for an older child, but my children are 3 and 17 months. The illustrations weren't that good. For the money, it wasn't the best book. Not recommended for young children whose parents have deployed recently or will be deploying.

2.0 out of 5 stars THERE ARE MUCH BETTER BOOKS OUT THERE!, February 4, 2008
This book is really poorly written- it seems like it should rhyme, and it just doesn't. It is a good message, but there are other books for this age group that have the same message and well written. Try "My Daddy is a Soilder"

Really can help a child understand why daddy is away at war. I also use it to read to my other granddaughter and replace the word "daddy" with "uncle". Read more

This is a great book for young military children facing deployment. My sons ask the same question whenever they hear about daddy's job. Read more
