Your Chance To Hear The Last Panther Speak is an eclectic mix of musings by renowned author Chase Von. Broken down into four sections - poetry, song lyrics, quotes, and short stories - Von's collection takes courageous leaps in addressing an array of topics, covering life, death, and everything in-between.

For those who have become disillusioned with the state of modern-day poetry, particularly its overemphasis on love & heartbreak, you will find the versatility of Von's poetry quite refreshing. He masterfully weaves his way through a tapestry of topics, gracing each with a deft touch that exudes the wisdom of a seasoned veteran. For example, in "Being A Man," he reflects on many of the superficial trappings of manhood, ultimately coming to the following realization:

"Now I see Maybe being a man means Caring about those Who will come after me"
And he even waxes nostalgic in this tender passage from "To My Daughter":

"I don't give you all you want
You'll eat that dinner
If you want ice cream!
You can pout all you want
You can even say
`My Daddy's mean!'"

Just as moving are Von's observations on religion, the breakdown of societal values, and the consequences of sexual promiscuity. Also, the stinging commentary veiled within the poem "Mr. White Man" provides a candid look at racism, that, while uncomfortable, is much-needed if true honesty will ever be established in the ongoing dialogue of race relations.

Among the most striking of Von's musings is this profound sentiment regarding the personal introspection we should all perform from time to time:

"Don't live behind the walls that guilt built
The longer you stay incased in that tomb
The harder it becomes to break free
And write a new and different story
With the pen
That is your life"

With such motivational insight, one could envision Von as a counselor or personal life coach, helping others reach their full potential on an everyday basis.

In an "Author's Statement" that opens the book, Von explains the significance of the book's title as his personal take on the fact that creators of great artistry often go unrecognized before their passing. If we truly are to "give people their flowers before they die," Chase Von should be swimming in a sea of daisies everyday. Your Chance To Hear The Last Panther Speak is altogether haunting, arresting, and inspiring, and a highly recommended read for anyone who has grown tired of the bland commercial offerings currently saturating bookshelves across the country. A welcome addition to the world of great literature, one can only hope that this opus is truly not our last chance to hear more from this promising young talent. -- APEX REVIEWS

Your Chance to Hear the Last Panther Speak by Chase VON is a book with an assortment of readings including poetry, song lyrics, quotes and short stories. Mr. VON has a way of expressing a variety of feelings that can touch the lives of all of us. Reading poetry of love, relationships, reality of war, society and just plain life experiences was moving. I found myself challenged by the words in the quote section of his book. I read them over a few times, wondering how they apply to my life and how I think. The book ends with several short stories, written in a format where I could visualize the scene and hear the voices as I interpreted the words.

Mr. VON has a writing style that grabbed me and allowed me to travel through the book, reading the words out loud with a great appreciation for his form of storytelling. At times his words are of a soft and gentle nature, then switching up with a more aggressive tone. I got a sense of Mr. VON's personal life and the diversity in his own background through his writings. From identifying as Black, Native American, with possibly some French, to being born into a military family, serving several years in the Armed Forces and having held a variety of very intense job positions, I learned a lot about who the man was. I was able to feel his desire for love, his sense of family, gratitude for his friends and love of life.

The wonderful thing I find in reading books like Your Chance to Hear the Last Panther Speaks is in the ability to read the book, put it down, to pick it up at a later date and still have a great appreciation for the author's gift of words. I highly recommend this to readers that appreciate poetry and short form storytelling.

Product Description

Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak (ISBN-10: 0976678705) is original, unique and exceptional. Chase Von's poetry is written with message and intent. From "Wrap That" and "The Mindset of a Gangster" to "Peace" and "Pink, Blue and Green" Chase speaks to the younger generation with 'street-speak' philosophy. In a recent interview the author said, "I would like to say that although some of it is raw, much of it is not. I just address a large array of topics so that everyone, regardless of where they are in life might have something in this book which they may be able to relate to. Not all in life is sweet but in most cases, even in the negative things I write about, there is a positive message. "Wrap That" is about contracting AIDS but the message there is that if you protect yourself, chances are you won't have to go down that path. It's told in a manner that although the content is adult, is really effective for reaching the younger people. One could almost say it reads like a rap. Younger people are engaging in sex, and the language used in the poem is probably mild compared to what a lot of young people are exposed to and use daily. A few teachers and others I have met have told me they think it should be in Colleges around the nation to increase awareness regarding unprotected sex and the possible consequences. You don't hear much about them now days, but at one point in California "Raves" where things you heard quite a bit about in the news. Ecstasy, dancing, and often loose drug induced behavior, so it some what describes that kind of a scenario as well."

Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak successfully gives the reader a break with inspiring and innovative quotes and song lyrics. Referring to his motivation to write original quotes and song lyrics the author says, "Quotes are things that people use as mantras for guiding their very lives. One that I have used often is "This too shall pass!" The great thing about writing them is hoping that people will use them in their lives as well As for song lyrics, another "immensely" is warranted here as well. Main Ingredient is an older group that I always thought had such meaningful lyrics. Prince is an exceptional poet, as well as Sade and Smokey Robinson, Bread is another one that comes to mind. Lyrics are really poetry to me, with a chorus and bridge in most cases."
The last portion of Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak are a collection of short stories. Just when you think the author is running out of gas he hits his stride strong and compelling. "The Tree and the Butterfly" is an instant classic and "The Bum" is a story you will be thinking about for a long time after you have put the book down.
Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak is the name of the book but if we are lucky Von Chase has more in his mind, heart and soul to share with the world. Your Chance to Hear The Last Panther Speak is phenomenal, rare, remarkable and unprecedented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chase's Poetry Review, September 30, 2007
By Chrissy K. McVay "Writer" (North Carolina) - See all my reviews

Chase Von's poetry is poignant without being preachy. His easy to understand verse can rouse deep emotions, even in those who claim not to enjoy poems. This has been a great year for this hard working, prolific writer and I'm in awe of his power to capture the flame of everyday life through his prose. Though a writer myself, I find poetry to be somewhat of a challenge, so I'm very impressed with the gifted Bard who calls himself Chase Von and look forward to reading more of his work in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Expanding Work, August 31, 2007
By Willard Barth "Willard Barth" (Scranton, PA United States) - See all my reviews
Having read so many poems and lyrics over the years, it was such a pleasant surprise to read the works of Chase Von. The Last Panther truly opens your mind by getting you to see the world through perceptions that inspire, as well as at times shock your current perceptions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys having their perceptions challenged and expanded.
