Engler's fine sense of humor coupled with his great understanding for the human condition give him an edge. -- Laurie Wagner Buyer, author, endorsement of Just Folks

For authenticity and humor, Just Folks by Jerry Engler is at the top of my list, a pure delight. -- Jonathan Holden, poet laureate of Kansas, endorsement of Just Folks

Jerry Engler is not to be taken lightly. His stories are whimsical, humorous, and always carry the unexpected twist. -- Don Coldsmith, western writer, endorsement of Just Folks

Product Description

I first met Jerry Engler in the newsroom of the Topeka Capital-Journal, back when it was the newsroom of the Topeka Daily Capital and the State Journal and we were trying to report on and explain the world to the paper's readers - which shows how long our friendship has lasted, and which gives at least Jerry the right to refer to me as an "old" friend.

And it gives me the right to tell you how good he is before you sit down to find out for yourself. For the benefit of you who are crossword puzzle aficionados, Jerry is a oner, a word my spelling checker doesn't like and which my desk dictionary doesn't recognize. But it means about the same thing as one of a kind. He is deep, he is wide, which you soon will discover for yourself.

And in the process you will have wondered why this book wasn't published years before. Many of us know you can't play the blues until you've paid the dues, and that it takes a heap of livin' to make a house a home.

Well, then, after your dues are paid and you've done that heap of livin', you just might be ready to write a book like this.

And part of the lesson in that will be that you will know that you don't write like this so you can become wealthy, or so your name becomes featured on marquees or bulletin boards. You write because you have been given the stories and are obligated to share them around.

Should you become wealthy and your name be featured on marquees or bulletin boards, you may think you've succeeded. But the true success will have been setting them down so others can know them, and so others can know you. As is true with these stories from Jerry Engler.

Merle Bird, Kansas author and editor

5.0 out of 5 stars Prairie Passage Hometown Heroes, December 20, 2005
By geoWIZard (Lawrence, KS United States) - See all my reviews
Having relocated to the Great Plains Heartland from the shores of Lower Lake Wobegon, I can relate to yarns like these! Jerry's artful word weaving helps me feel like I've found another praire home companion ... only warmer!

While re-calibratng my Kansas "compass" with the Kansas Environmental Leadership Program during the past year (2005), I'm sure I'd met dead ringers from several of Jerry's composite characters. These extended family tales help create a sense of belonging to a much broader community ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous stories that have wide appeal, December 11, 2005
Jerry Engler has created a cast of characters that seem real enough to touch. Engler's style of writing pulls you into the story, and makes you feel as though you've just taken a seat at the local diner - just in time to listen to a story about old Harlan Medlam and that time he . . . (take your pick - old Harlan has quite a colorful history!).

For those who were born and raised in the heartland, the stories may well remind them of characters from their own pasts (I think I've met a few of them myself!). And for those readers who are city folks, they'll get a taste of the country life that will leave them smiling.

All in all, an enjoyable reminder of the simpler life. It comes with my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars great understanding of rural humor, November 3, 2005
By tommy (Kansas) - See all my reviews
Engler captures all the subtle humor of life in rural America. Having grown up on a farm myself, it's easy to associate the humor Engler uses in his stories with that of my own life. This book would be a great addition to anyones personal library whether they're familiar with country life or whether they just like great humor. Engler has a way with words that is unique and begs to be read. Thanks for the memories, Jerry Engler!
