Product Description

Nothing that can be written about Lincoln can show his character in such a true light as the yarns and stories he was so fond of telling, and at which he would laugh as heartily as anyone. For a man whose life was so full of great responsibilities, Lincoln had many hours of laughter when the humorous, fun-loving side of his great nature asserted itself.

While nearly all of Lincoln's stories have a humorous side, they also contain a moral, which every good story should have. They contain lessons that could be taught so well in no other way. Every one of them is a sermon. Lincoln, like the Man of Galilee, spoke to the people in parables.

The parables, yarns, stories, anecdotes and sayings of the "Immortal Abe" deserve a place beside Aesop's Fables, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and all other books that have added to the happiness and wisdom of mankind. Lincoln's stories are like Lincoln himself; the more we know of them the better we like them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Worth Reading, December 12, 2007

Abraham Lincoln's Humorous Stories are a marvelous collection of stories told by and about America's greatest President. His stories were and are genuinely humorous. His stories had a purpose. They were always told to illustrate a point and generally cleared the air of pomposity and pretense. This book is a treasure trove of social and political commentary, most of which is still applicable.

For example, when General Grant was accused of being a drunkard, Lincoln responded: "...you just find out, to oblige me, what brand of whiskey Grant drinks, because I want to send a barrel of it to each one of my generals."

The examples are too numerous to repeat in a short review. The best course would be to read the book. You'll be glad you did.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abraham Lincoln's Humorous Stories, November 22, 2007
Truly Lincoln is a man for the ages, but not this book! It is hard to write a truly funny account of his humorous stories, for he used impersonations and other actions to make much of his humor truly funny. This is an amusing account of our beloved president, but not a book to evoke much laughter!
