Editorial Reviews

Product Description
ACME and CRG Gallery are proud to present the work of Tomory Dodge in the first comprehensive monograph of his work produced between 2002 and 2007. Tomory Dodge s paintings are defining of a new generation of American painters drawing from a tradition of the historical landscape informed by social context and an obsession with the material abstract gesture. With Dodge's acute awareness of his medium and its relationship to image and cultural place has come his extraordinary ability to blur the boundaries between representational space and the latent physical form that constitutes an image. This catalog offers an extensive overview of the artist s work accompanied by an essay by Jeffrey Ryan.

About the Author
Tomory Dodge's paintings describe places on the edge of society, clandestine sites where revelers might go to partake in the illicit or where youth might go to explore and possibly uncover the remains of a hiker that lost his way. While much of the imagery in his work is in fact drawn from things observed during excursions into the California desert much is left to fantasy. While the subject matter is rich throughout his work, the material itself is often even more so. Dodge s surfaces are held together by networks of well understood gestures; thickly laid on with crude precision, each with a sense of economy and intention independent of the images they constitute. And thus the images represented begin to seem more like clever armatures for something more concerned with the abstract and gestural. While much of his paintings appear to be influenced by a cinematic understanding of image and light with such characteristics as lens-flare and anamorphic distortion, anomalies found only in the realm of photography, it is for Dodge a means of expanding an already vast vocabulary of imagery in the service of paint. Tomory Dodge was born in 1974 in Denver, Colorado. He now lives and works in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning images, April 14, 2008
This book serves as an introduction to the work of artist, Tomory Dodge. It is filled with stunning images of his works, from the immense sized paintings to fairly small ones. Beautifully photographed. Going through this book makes me wish for one of his paintings to be hung on a wall in my house and envy anyone else who is lucky enough to have one.
