Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Stinky the monster is content in the smelly swamp that he shares with his pet toad and other friendly animals until a boy from the nearby town wanders into the area. Stinky is afraid of kids because they are so different from him. They like to take baths and eat apples and candy while he loves mud and pickled onions. When he tries to scare the boy away, he discovers that the boy is also fond of toads and enjoys exploring the muckiest part of the swamp, and the two become friends. The charming cartoon artwork, full of humorous details, complements the text, and the muted color scheme makes Stinky endearing rather than scary. The simple vocabulary and repetition of words make the text accessible for emergent readers, who will love the graphic-novel format. The engaging plot shows young readers that it's possible to make friends with those who may seem very different from themselves.–Mari Pongkhamsing, St. Perpetua School, Lafayette, CA

From Booklist

Swamp monster Stinky has a good life in all the wonderful, stinky, squishy mud, with his pet toad, Wartbelly, and other swamp critters such as slimy slugs and possums. However, close by is a town full of kids that Stinky thinks are yucky because they like to take baths and eat such things as cakes and apples. When a boy invades the swamp and builds a tree house, Stinky tries to scare him away. Nothing works—it turns out the boy actually likes toads and swamps—but when they finally meet and talk, each one realizes he needs a friend. Davis’ colorful art makes Stinky and his swamp delightfully yucky and attractive to young readers. Her simplified graphic-novel structure does have some sophistication in panel placement, but the panels’ reading order is clear. Although the vocabulary may be too much for younger children to read on their own, the repetition will have them quickly learning mucky, yucky, and gross. Grades K-2. --Kat Kan

5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful, Bright, and Engaging!, October 10, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon Books) (Hardcover)
Stinky is funny, colorful with a lot of activity on every page, and it teaches an important lesson about friendship and overcoming prejudices without being heavy-handed. Eleanor Davis' book is full of vivid detail--she even includes a map of Stinky's territory and the town that the little boy Nick lives in. There are some great lines that kids repeat over and over again, for example: "mucky mud, slimy slugs and smelly monsters." It's great for a more experienced reader to read alone, or for read alouds with younger children who are still learning how to read independently.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT NEW BOOK!, July 9, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon Books) (Hardcover)
This new book has both me and my kids laughing at every page. The drawings are not only beautiful, but cute and witty. My son really identifies with the baseball-hat-wearing Nick and asks me, "Mom, can we go to the swamp and find Stinky?" The lovable relationship between this unexpected duo is a model friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stinky...Rated E for everyone!, March 26, 2009
By Sandy Reader (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stinky (Toon Books) (Hardcover)
This is a great book for all boys who love to read, who don't really love to read, or who are reluctant to read! My 5th grader, who falls into the latter category, picked this up to read and fell in love with Stinky. Buy this book if your reluctant reader loved "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. It definitely appeals to that age group!
