Product Description

This book examines Fedora 10 for the user. Though administrative tools are covered, the emphasis is on what a user would need to know to perform tasks. The emphasis here is on what users face when using Fedora, covering topics like installation, applications, software management, the GNOME and KDE desktops, shell commands, and both the Fedora administration and network tools. Desktop effects as implemented by GNOME's Compiz-fusion and KDE's KWin are examined. New features are covered in detail like Network Manager with support for wireless 3G and Ethernet, Fedora Printing and PackageKit's new interface, recovery with FirstAidKit, and the RPM Fusion repository for free and nonfree third party packages like multimedia codecs. Also additional desktops and installs are reviewed including XFCE, LXDE, Sugar (OLPC), and Omega (multimedia). The ebook version features hyper-linked overview, contents, index, chapters, sections, and Web sites.

From the Publisher

This book examines Fedora for the user. Though administrative tools are covered, the emphasis is on what a user would need to know to perform tasks. The emphasis here is on what users face when using Fedora, covering topics like installation, applications, software management, the GNOME and KDE desktops, shell commands, and both the Fedora administration and network tools. Desktops are examined in detail, including configuration options. Applications are reviewed. This book is designed for the Fedora 10 desktop, with all the latest features of interest to users. Part 1 focuses on getting started, covering Fedora information and resources, Fedora Live CD/DVDs, Live USBs, installing and setting up Fedora, and basic use of the desktop as well as device access. Recovery with FirstAidKit is also reviewed. Part 2 keys in on applications and software management. Repositories and their use are covered in detail, including the new PackageKit interface. Covered in detail is the RPM Fusion repository, which integrates and replaces the third party repositories Livna, Freshrpms, and Dribble. These older repositories are now empty, with one exception. Then office, multimedia, mail, and Web applications are examined. It includes coverage of the PulseAudio sound interface and a review of the Java OpenJDK and Omega multimedia spin. Part 3 covers the two major desktops, GNOME and KDE4, discussing features like panels, applets, and file manager views. Desktop effects (compositing window managers) for both GNOME and KDE are covered. Unique KDE4 features like the dashboard and the Zoom User Interface are also explored. In addition, the shell interface is also explored, including features like history, file name completion, directory and file operations, among others. Part 4 deals with administration topics, first discussing system tools like the GNOME system monitor, the Disk Usage Analyzer, temperature monitors, and SELinux configuration tool. Then a detailed chapter on Fedora system administration tools for managing users, the date and time, is presented, along with service management and file system access. The network administration chapter covers a variety of network tasks, including configuration of network connections, Wireless connections, 3G wireless, Firewalls, and Samba Windows access. The Printing chapter examines the new system-config-printer interface with personal printers and online drivers. Appendix B reviews new additional desktop, including XFCE, LXDE, Sugar (OLPC), and Openbox.
