I'm only partially into reading this book, but I feel that I have to comment. I've seen the movie, and even in the first few chapters the book offers a ton of extra details. Things that move quickly in the movie are explained in far greater detail, even if we hear little of what the characters think. So far I have no problem with the writing. What there is little to none of is backstory. I assume that this is a decision that was made at the top. It seems that the powers that be want the backstory to either be developed in future movies, or told in some of the books that will come out. Don't expect to have all of your questions answered, but do get this book if you want a fuller sense of what's happening in the movie. Since I haven't finished the book yet, I'll give it 4 stars for "so far so good with lots of potential."

OK - now I've read the whole book. Could the action have been written in a more exciting way? Possibly, but I found myself getting swept along with the action most of the time. I appreciated the extra scenes and feel that I understand the movie better. I wish that there was more backstory, but am hopeful that all will be revealed in good time (you hear that Disney/Lucasfilm?1?). I'm just happy to have Star Wars back on track!

Back when the prequel Star Wars trilogy was coming out, I made sure to always read the novelizations of the novel before seeing the movie. I found that it enhanced the story in a lot of ways. First, it gave better motivations to the characters. Second, it helped fill in the backstory, making the film’s plots more cohesive. Also, since I could get the books more easily than going to the theater, I could relive the story over and over.

The novelization of the Force Awakens does a good job laying out what happens in the story, but it doesn’t provide a lot of the extra, behind-the-scenes rationalization I was looking for.

The story is laid out in a very straightforward, brisk manner. It moves quickly, and is a lot of fun. But there isn’t a lot of description. Nothing about the fights, nothing about the individual character’s appearance. Of course, everyone knows that John Bodega is Finn and Daisey Ridley is Rey, but their descriptions in the book were… underwhelming. I felt like I was getting just enough to give me the short, abbreviated gist of the story. But there was a serious lack of world building that would have made this more immersive.

There are a lot of questions that the book brought up, but didn’t push forward. Which could be a downside of the movie (I haven’t seen it as of writing this). But I’ll save that judgement for later. Here’s hoping those will be answered.

Appreciated the additional exposition provided by the novelization. There were a number of sequences not presented in the film itself.I had purchased the book in hopes that would be the case.

For those looking for the missing exposition, move along. Aside from the "science" behind Starkiller Base and a couple deleted scenes of Poe getting around after his crash on Jakku and Finn/Rey moving between locations on the Base, there is not much added to the plot here. It's a solid novelization -- quick, breezy, and fun -- just like the film, but won't really answer any plot questions you might have had in the theatre.

I bought the book, hoping to clear up some plot holes from the movie, and wasn't disappointed. A pleasant read, that didn't get too deep into technical details, I found the novelization of the movie excellent. There are several missing story lines, which may have been edited out of the movie, that helped fill in some gaps in logic. I would have enjoyed some longer, more detailed descriptions of the fight scenes, however. Still well worth the read.

A very good novelization about the movie. Lots of details not shown in the film. If you have some questions, some of them are answered in this book. There are some minor differences from the book and the movie but it's mostly the same structure and plot.

I watched the movie before reading the book. I actually watched the movie twice before I finished the book. The book is very close to the movie as expected. It doesn't give a whole lot of extra information but it does have a few extra subtleties. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Alan never fails to impress with his fiction, adapted or unique. Very nice. In this book, Chewbacca rips a dude's arm off. You will not see that at the movies! Read what else the film editors left on their cutting floor!
