Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Written to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Neiman Marcus's first restaurant, the posh Zodiac Room in Dallas, this sumptuous cookbook presents recipes drawn from all of the chain's 42 locations. The book, which is spiced with anecdotes about the creation of famous Neiman Marcus dishes-such as the Duke of Windsor Sandwich and the Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookie-contains sections for standard plates such as soups, main courses, sides and desserts. But it also contains chapters on specialties such as starter and entrée salads, sandwiches, small plates and cocktails, which highlight the department store's position as one of the classic spots for ladies' luncheons, fashion shows and afternoon teas. The soup chapter offers a variety of nicely textured recipes, including Poblano Chile and Corn Chowder and Moroccan Vegetable Soup. The main course section emphasizes fish and seafood (though one its most appealing entries is a straightforward recipe for caper-rich Farfalle Provencal). Recipes for delicious condiments like Black Olive Tapenade and sublime desserts like Individual Toasted Coconut-Lemon Cakes round out the volume. Though well worth the time needed to prepare them, the majority of the store's recipes are complicated, and busy home cooks may choose to tackle such fancy fare only for special occasions and holidays. No matter: with its asymmetrically composed and stylized photographs, this carefully arranged luxury tome will be equally admired on the countertop or the coffee table.

Product Description

For nearly a century, Neiman Marcus has epitomized luxury—urbane merchandise in an elegant ambience. Neiman Marcus is also famous for the extraordinary food it serves at its restaurants and cafés across the country. Now, at long last, the renowned institution shares more than fifty years’ worth of legendary dishes in this lavishly illustrated cookbook.

From the flagship store in Dallas, featuring the Zodiac Restaurant, to its landmark Rotunda restaurant overlooking Union Square in San Francisco and its newest restaurant, Mariposa, in Coral Gables, Florida, there are forty-two Neiman Marcus restaurants in stores across the country. The first one opened in 1953, and in the last half century Neiman Marcus has become almost as well known for its fresh and delicious cuisine as it is for its fashion.

Neiman Marcus Cookbook will delight the store’s loyal fans and food connoisseurs alike, with more than 160 delectable recipes. The exquisite dishes range from simple soups and salads such as Summer Tomato Soup with Basil and Ricotta and Mediterranean Fattoush Salad to more ambitious entrées like Burnt Honey-Orange Chicken and Soy-Glazed Farm-Raised Trout. Longtime fans will be delighted to find recipes for Neiman Marcus’s famous Strawberry Butter, Mandarin Orange Soufflé Salad, Popovers, and Chicken Salad—not to mention their legendary Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Neiman Marcus Cookbook is a celebration of a store that has been a trusted institution for nearly a century, and of a cuisine that’s been the favorite of discerning Americans for generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now among my 10 favorite cookbooks, February 7, 2004
By "chalkisltd" (frozen wastelands of Upstate New York) - See all my reviews
Chef Garvin treats us to favorites, new and old, and does so with clear, easy to follow recipes. One could wish for far more pictures of the finished dishes rather than store shots, but that doesn't diminish my enthusiasm for this new book. It's worth making space on a crowded shelf for this treasure. It's also a suitable book for nearly any level of cook. The selections are superb, the writing is clear and easy to follow. It proves that recipes need not be fussy to be delicious.

In addition to the world-famous Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe (the story you've heard is a hoax, according to Chef) which really IS worth the price of admission, I'm enjoying their unique assortment of starter salads and main dish salads. You'll find a recipe for their famous mandarin souffle, timeless soups, intriguing sandwiches, and a very wide range of tastes in entrees. A concern for me, a thrifty shopper, are the prime ingredients of entrees. I very seldom find expensive cuts of meat to be 'better', simply more expensive. This selection allows me a number of reasonable choices, although nearly any of the salads, sandwiches or soups would be considered a meal in our home! Buy the book for the desserts alone...

The book is fairly large format, 10.25" square. It's a classy production, beautifully photographed (again, I lament not having pictures of more of the actual dishes), and with a simple and clear presentation of the recipe preparation. I'm very surprised to find 2 pages that should never have passed an editor, but they won't slow you down. The quality of the book and its recipes overcomes these two pages with blatant mistakes.

In preparation for moving I've packed about 50-60 favorite cookbooks, keeping space for only about 10 in the kitchen. This one stays in the kitchen. It's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars It made Oprah's Favorite Things List for 2003, November 25, 2003
By P. Jeffrey "pjeff3" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At last, the secrets of the wonderful food at Nieman Marcus restaurants is revealed! The Fresh Market pecan tuna salad recipe
is revealed as well as the Nieman Marcus chicken salad. And guess what? The secret behind that wonderful strawberry butter for the warm popovers is a real shortcut. Some of the recipes are a little complicated, but there are plenty of simple ones for salads and sandwiches. The book is so beautiful to look at even non-cooks would enjoy it. When I first saw it, I thought to myself, this would make a great Christmas gift. And now Oprah is on the same page since she featured it in her annual Christmas show. This cookbook made her "Favorite Things" 2003 list for Christmas.

I received my copy of the new, Neiman Marcus Cookbook, a few days ago and still cannot put it down. The book is beautifully written with a lovely tribute to Mr. Stanley Marcus and family. The recipes are well organized, can be made by just about anyone and will easily serve either one or a group. This new, Neiman Marcus Cookbook, is a wonderful literary celebration of turning simple food into an extraordinary meal! Truly a book to get excited over & already one of my favorites!!!
