5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on many levels ... I could not put it down, April 20, 2002
By Ryan Hughes (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This was an excellent read and a very interesting book. It was so easy to get wrapped up in the characters and be transported into this true experience. A great read for anyone interested in WW2 history, dealing with hardships, relationships, and romance. Follow John on his journey of self discovery and see the perserverance of love from peacetime to D-Day and beyond. A true love story with a dramatic backround. Hidden love blossoms as does the war, then John must hide some of his involvement in the war from his growing family. It was hard to stay away from the book once I got it started. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A G.I. and his wife's experiences from WWII and D-Day, January 20, 2002
By Sojourn (Pitman, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
Reading some of the actual letters written some 60 years ago shares the emotion and reality of this struggle with us. John writes his letters back home to his wife Mary (sometimes 3/day) with such attention to detail and candid humor, never thinking someday they would be published. He sees himself as just another G.I., but his story is absolutely inspiring. Jane Hagedorn does a wonderful job preserving and presenting this unique perspective into one of the world's most historic events. Reading this book has made me feel proud of my grandparents and cheerish the relationship I have with my own wife.
