Runner-Up: Around We Go by Tonya L Chatelain. -- Book of the Year - 2002 Diva Award for Lesbian Excellence

Product Description

Susan felt torn about the feelings she was still harboring for her college sweetheart, as well as those for the new woman she met on the mountain one cold snowy night. Her life had taken a sudden turn when, out of the blue, she received a call from her ex after many years asking her to be the maid of honor at her wedding. As all her feelings and emotions came rushing back, it was all she could do to stay calm. She reluctantly said yes, when all she wanted to do was scream "no".

It was late one evening on a mountain in Colorado when her life was changed, and not even her past could hurt her now. Her car sliding off the road, seemed like destiny when it brought her into the arms of her rescuer. It was now the future that she was more afraid of. The only thing that felt real and right was how wonderful she felt being with this woman, wrapped in her arms, and making passionate love to her at every opportunity.

From a houseboat in Key West to a home in the mountains, would the love they had for one another be strong enough to keep them together through all that was about to happen? Things seemed to be going good, maybe too good, until the phone rang--

1.0 out of 5 stars I read this book and then threw it away., May 30, 2004
By "pambc" (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
"Around We Go" was one of the worst purchases I have ever made. I must not have read the reviews...when one has to fight with an Author's gramatical errors and unsure story lines, why bother? After I finished this book, I threw it away (into the recycling bin).

I did read the entire book...I think out of amazement that a book of this caliber could be not only published, but sold for $18.95(approximately).

The only other use I can think for this book is very expensive firewood.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too bad!, December 26, 2002
By A Customer
Ms. Chatelain is a great storyteller; she's the one that kept us spellbound around the camp fire or during school recesses. She has more plot per page than any other lesbian romance I've ever read; and that is good. BUT. The editing of this book is egregiously bad. The grammar, punctuation and spelling are atrocious. There are elementary mistakes on every page, or so it seems, that are distracting and make the book hard to read. Ms. Chatelain has a good ear for dialog, but somebody thought that people do not use contractions when speaking. The result is that none of the characters say "don't" or "can't" or "you're" or any other common contraction. After a while, this makes the dialog sound stilted and strange, as though translated from some foreign language by someone whose native language was not English. There were several times when I almost put the book down in disgust, but I'll admit I wanted to find out what happened next. This is all a shame, because with a strong editor, this book could be very good. **There are other problems with the book, like character development (non-existent), but I won't dwell on them because they are common to lesbian romances, alas. ** One last pet peeve. I hate books whose cover is so cheap that it curls the minute you pick it up. This book has one of those covers. ** I'm adding this because I just read that someone defends the poor grammar, spelling and punctuation on the grounds that it's the way "country" people speak. Trust me, this is not dialect; this is poor English, period.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Zero Wing of US lesbo pulp, October 17, 2003
By "avidia" (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
Mixed reviews, indeed! If you come here to look for a lesbian romance book, taking the genre for what it is, I would advise you to first scan all reviews on several titles, and determine which kind of reader you are. There seem to be two types of readers visiting these pages. This book may be the best example to categorize yourself: you will either love it or put it away after 50 pages.
Much of what can be said about this book has already been covered by other reviewers, so I won't repeat their comments. Personally I classify this book as the single worst I have ever read. So bad in fact that it fascinated me - I wanted to expound what sets it apart from what I think is a good book. During reading I am usually not consciously aware of technical elements like grammar and spelling, character development, dialogue structure, and transitions from one scene to another. But in this book they were so out of order they completely diverted my attention from the story itself.
Because such an evaluation is inherently personal, below are some excerpts I find quite indicative of what you can expect in this book. If you think there is something wrong, don't buy the book. If you can't see any problem, by all means do!

"I understand Tiffany. I will not lie to you and say I am not hurt as I had hoped our love would help you except it at least a little bit as we grew closer and that you would want others to know, but I do understand. I will not say anything to them or anyone else."

Susan knew Tiffany struggled with them as a couple a great deal but she didn't realized how much until now. "Stop it," Susan interrupted. "I don't want to think about it. We still have Christmas and then six more months after that to be together (Also for me to change your mind, Susan thought) now lets not talk about it anymore right now, ok? Please."

Susan didn't stop; she drove straight to Stephanie's house. She had to see her, things could not have gone worse at Tiffany's. It was slow going and she still didn't have the hang of driving on this stuff, and everything kept running through her head. Tiffany and Stephanie and the past and the now, she was so lost. Was what she had with Tiffany (which she now knew was only one sided all along) real and still there enough, she doubted it and was what she had started to feel with Stephanie real and not just rebound and enough to last? She kept asking herself how could it be rebound? It had been several years after all.
