Editorial Reviews

Review

'The editors succeed in providing a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the broad scope of syncope, which makes this book a principal text in the field of syncope. The book is very well written and is an excellent addition to the library of any physician who seeks information on the causes, evaluation, and management of syncope.'

Hamid Afshar (MD, Ochsner Clinic Foundation), Doodys

Product Description

Syncope: Mechanisms and Management is the principle text and sole source devoted to pathophysiological, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic information in this field.

The second edition has been completely updated and remains the most comprehensive and useable reference ever published on this common clinical entity. It is a ‘must-have’ purchase providing up-to-date coverage of virtually every known cause of syncope, integrating knowledge of pathophysiology with practical guidelines for diagnosis and management.

This book includes new chapters and new data from the ISSUE trial, as well as results of the multi-center trials using device therapy in patients with syncope and organic heart disease. It also contains updated information about the mechanism of neurocardiogenic syncope, carotid-sinus hypersensitivity, syncope in childhood and adolescence, chronic fatigue and orthostatic hypotensive disorders.

Syncope: Mechanisms and Management is thoughtfully structured to make this large quantity of diverse information easy to digest – each section is designed to stand alone while also being part of a coherent whole, forming a solid foundation for further development in this rapidly expanding and increasingly complex field.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential reference for anyone with autonomic dysfunction, September 16, 1998
By A Customer
This book is a valuable guide for patients grappling with autonomic dysfuntion, and also for their relatives. Several different classes of sycope are covered in detail. Many patients spend years trying to get a correct diagnosis, and after diagnosis, they struggle to find some helpful therapy. Many family practice physicians may see a patient with prodromal symptoms for years before referring them to a specialist. This work helps explain why these problems are often brushed aside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on the autonomics, May 16, 2009
You can where the emphasis is going to be tell by who edited this book. This is what I expected, what I wanted and what I got.
This is an excellent complete well written and edited book that provides electrophysiologists and cardiologists, who are asked to manage non-arrhythmic syncope whether we like it or not, with a basis to do so.
This novel is an excellent compedium of knowledge for the general cardiologist or electrophysiologist providing a very practical knowledge of non-arrhythmic syncope with an appropriate level of basic science.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Clinical Syncope Text, April 19, 2009
As a practicing cardiologist, I routinely treat patients with syncope, and this text, edited by one of the leaders in the world on the subject, is excellent and has been very useful to me. There is enough basic science here to be useful (and you cannot treat syncope without understanding the underlying mechanisms) without becoming tedious, and is included to the extent necessary. The text is very direct regarding how to optimally proceed to attempt to establish a diagnosis, and options regarding treatment are clearly spelled out. In addition to chapters on the various types of syncope, there are also chapters on special populations (young, elderly, athletes) as well as chapters on the legal aspects of providing care to this population. For any health care provider who routinely provides evaluation or treatment for patients with syncope I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough.
