4.0 out of 5 stars You Can Drink Beer & Still Lose Weight, June 23, 2003
By Frank (Chicago) - See all my reviews
The concept of the book is a simple one---research the carbohydrate counts of more than 350 regular brewed beers and wrap a low carbohydrate diet around it with recipes and tips for keeping the pounds off. For my part, it's working! I've lost 14 pounds in the last 20 days and can really notice it and so can my wife.

Don't bother looking for the carb counts of regular beers on cans or bottles. The author points out that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms doesn't allow it though a nutritional analysis is mandatory on all "light" beers. Skilnik claims it took 2 years of telephone calls, e-mailing and faxing to put this book together, probably helped by the fact that he's a certified brewer with a degree in Brewing Technology from the Siebel Institute of Technology, the oldest school for brewers in the U.S.

There's lot of micro and regional beers here and imports too plus the typical American stuff. You can also go to the book's website for updates and additions to the carbohydrate counts of even more beers as they become available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works For Me!, September 17, 2003
By A Customer
If you can once again enjoy small portions of once forbidden food items like potatoes, rice and bread (in moderate amounts, of course)in the mid to later stages of a low carbohydrate diet, why not beer?

The list of beers with their carbohydrate counts in this book opens up a whole new side of controlled carbohydrate eating. The key is moderation. You make the decision how much beer you can incorporate into your daily carb intake. With the beer/carb numbers listed in the book, you now have full control to enjoy regular brewed beers while dieting.

BTW, I've dropped 25 pounds and still enjoy a beer or two a couple of times a week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book DOES NOT Advocate Drinking Beer Will Make You Thin, October 20, 2004
"Unsupported claims and theories how drinking beer will make you thin, if you don't eat pizza with it."

To the reviewer who posted this...the book is about moderation. There is not one bit of advice in the book that advocates that drinking beer will make you thin. How do I know? I'm the author. By listing the carbohydrate counts of over 350 beers---something that Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, etc. does not do, and pointing out how the MODERATE consumption of beer can be worked into a low-carb diet, the book adds another piece of information to the low-carb scene.

BTW, Atkins, Protein Power, and now---even South Beach, say the moderate consumption of beer is okay. They just don't give you the carb counts for beer. Duh! This book does.
