A fantastic apocalyptic thriller, January 19, 2005
Elliott Stephens was born in 1950 a miracle child to a couple who were told could never give birth. His father died one year later so he has been raised by his cold single mother, Gloria who blames her child for the death of her spouse. Elliot has no friends and is considered a troublemaker at school. When Elliott loses control he thinks of bad things happening to others; however his fantasies turn real with accidents happening consistently and one student even died. His mom fears him although he is only seven.
Mesphisto has observed Elliott in action selects a mentor to help the lad focus his power. He sends a wolf to guide the lad, but the subservent asks his master to wait until Elliot is an adult to better use him as a pawn of hell. The devil agrees to wait until the kid is stronger, but kills the wolf for disobedience. Though things around Elliot have quieted down, the day of the awakening is coming with hell on earth; God has selected his acolytes to battle the devil's spawn.
William P. Haynes has provided a tense modern day biblical thriller that will grip readers from start to finish. Elliot is fabulous protagonist as he seems like an innocent lab, but instead is a ferocious wolf. His selected opponents do not seem near his equal, but that seems apropos when one considers the selection of Moses as a spokesperson. Fans of angel-devil warfare on earth will want to read the exciting first book of THE CURSE OF MESPHISTO'S SEED though be warned that the font seems small.

Review by Louise Bohmer, horror author, December 2, 2004
Reading The Curse of Mesphisto's Seed is like taking a walk through the dreams of gods and devils. You will find yourself enveloped in an arcane gothic atmosphere, and each page of this darkly poetic novel will take you deeper into a hellish battle between good and evil.
Patrick Stephens made a deal with the devil. He wanted a son in exchange for his soul. That child comes in the form of Elliott, a boy with untapped, demonic powers.
As Elliott grows, so do his sinister abilities. Soon, people who have stirred the wrath of Elliott are suffering tragic fates; death by fire.
One man suspects the truth; Deputy Mark Talbot. When Mark is severely burned in a confrontation with Elliott, he acquires mystical powers of his own. He and Sheriff Josh Riley set off on a quest to fight Elliott and Mephisto. The evil and danger they encounter takes them deep into the heart of the Devil's Lair, where Mark's ancient magics are tested as he battles The Prince of Darkness.
When Mark returns from his battle inside the inferno, he finds more than twenty years have past. He returns to a different world where his friends have aged, while he remains unchanged by time.
Josh Riley and Mark join forces once more to hunt for Elliott and destroy him, but will the task end in their deaths? Can they stop the primeval Mesphisto and his chosen son?
William P. Haynes uses vivid description and surreal, poetic imagery to weave a novel that takes you on a haunting journey filled with old spell books, time vortexes and the eternal struggle of balancing the light and dark. The Curse of Mesphisto's Seed is an engrossing, creepy read that will not be forgotten. This intense tale will remain with you long after the lights are out.

Gustave Dore's art in Literature-Dante's Inferno revisited, March 7, 2005
Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy
THE CURSE OF MESPHISTO'S SEED
AUTHOR: William P. Haynes
Elliott is an obsessive, intelligent youngster that sometimes frightens his own mother. He has visions, terrifying nightmares and is obsessed with his dead father. Gloria remains in denial until Elliott goes to school and many very strange things begin to happen, including a mysterious death.
Sheriff Josh Riley and his deputy, Mark Talbot know that things are not what they seem when they investigate a fire and the two set out to discover the mystery that surrounds Elliott. What they discover is not only unbelievable but threatening to all of humanity. The author's vivid imagery brings to mind the work of artist, Gustave Dore, illustrator of the 19th century Dante's Divine Comedy.
The true conflict in this story is between God and the devil. God's representative, Mark Talbot has been bestowed with supreme powers, however Elliott the devil's advocate has powers of his own. Accompanied by the wolf-like beast he wrecks havoc on his victims. The devil sees it all as a gloriously amusing game of horror. Throughout the plot, the battle wages taking one victim after another until the ultimate confrontation when only one returns.
Author William Haynes weaves a highly imaginative thriller of suspense and horror. His characters are determined and purposeful, never wavering from their cause-good against evil. In the fires of hell, the battle rages taking the reader on a journey into the bowels of evil incarnate. Frightening yet entertaining, it is a darkly gothic tale- a great book for paranormal fans.
Haynes is the author of numerous chapbooks of poetry and has been published internationally. His writing reflects his poetic style. He resides in Rolla, Missouri. This is his first novel. Reviewer: Shirley Roe, Allbooks Reviews.
