Product Description

As I was growing up, so was Baltimore, Maryland. In these memoirs, an attempt was made to capture some of our quaint practices, customs, eating habits, and even wonders, like the bay. "Bawlmer, Merlyn" in essence is probably no different from similar tales that could be told by a guy from Chicago, or New York, or maybe even Los Angeles-because the threads used to ravel the creation may very well be universal. Ah, but the final tapestry's beauty, or lack thereof, depends on the weaver's care and expertise. Was I witty? Truthful? Believable? Mainly people from Bawlmer, Merlyn, will know the answers to these questions. Oh, hopefully some "fur-ners" may appreciate the efforts made herein, also. But, my friend, only time and exposure to the public can make the decision. Ultimately, you the reader, shall be the final judge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Baltimore MD native remembers...., November 4, 2005
The author was born in 1940, simpler times in Baltimore. Like most children of that era, his mom was a housewife, his dad worked, and kids his age played or went to school. The war in Europe seemed unimaginable and far away unless a family member or friend was killed or injured in battle. No one he knew was rich, but everyone got by just fine. Whether bumming orange crates from local grocers to build "race cars" or riding bikes on foggy mornings by the harbor, Hyland and his friends had fun. With humor and enthusiasm, Hyland shares memories of his first dance, first kiss, first beer, first car. The early years of rock and roll accompany him through high school, then college. And he's finally forced out of his safe neighborhood cocoon by a stint in the Army Reserves. Each experience takes him nearer to adulthood and the adult responsibilities of a job, wife, and children.

This serio-comic book details life as it was before war protests and the explosion of technology. Best of all, Hyland shares his memories of Baltimore, its history and changes over more than half a century. He tells his story with charming humor and a light hearted style.Bawlmer, Merlyn is a fascinating history of Baltimore, shared from one man's
experience. Hyland tells his story with charming humor and warm hearted style.
