Product Description

Written as "penance" for the DEATH WISH movie, Brian Garfield's novel DEATH SENTENCE picks up Paul Benjamin as he arrives in Chicago. He feels compelled to continue avenging on his family, who were the victims of senseless vicious attacks. Now he learns that his vigilante behavior is not a solution. Instead, it's a terrible new problem that becomes a dreadful menace, to him and to the woman he loves. . . .

About the Author

Bestseller Brian Garfield lives in California. He has written more than fifty novels, and eighteen films are based on his works. He has served in the U.S. Army and has been president of both the Western Writers of America and the Mystery Writers of America (and received the latter's Edgar Award for best novel of the year). A film about young Theodore Roosevelt in the Wild West, based on Garfield's book Manifest Destiny, is in pre-production. His 2007 The Meinertzhagen Mystery is a biography of a British rogue spy who was a model for Ian Fleming's James Bond. Garfield's works include The Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians, the original films Legs and The Stepfather, and such novels-later-filmed as Death Wish, Wild Times, Relentless, The Last Hard Men, Fleshburn, Necessity, and the award-nominated Hopscotch, with Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson, which Garfield co-produced and co-wrote from his own novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sequel to book not movie, October 9, 2007
The 1st reviewer WAS right (in a way). Death Sentence (the book) is the sequel to Death Wish (the book). Death Wish II and Death Sentence (the movie) both deviate from the book's plot. Both these books tell the story of Paul Benjamin and NYC accountant who becomes a vigilante after an attack on his family. The first movie changed some character details and name and all subsequent movies follow that plot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Death wish, death sentence, death period, April 26, 2009
Go figure, both Dead Wish and Death Sentence, the sequel, were out of print for ages until the Kevin Bacon film Death Sentence appeared in 2007. So they brought it back in print, slapped a film tie-in cover, and likely duped a few folks who thought it was a novelization or was more related to the new film.

Death Sentence was the Chicago follow-up to Death Wish and has Paul Kersey taking his vigilante act on the road, just as was suggested at the end of the first film. The novel is short and brisk and not very deep, and lacks something the first one had...written almost like a film tie-in.

Either way, since the Death Wish film series entered camp territory with the third one in the 80s, the regular-guy vigilante flick has been cheapo territory. Probably more for fans of the first book than movie, this isn't bad but it's just odd they didn't bring both books back in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Sentence is NOT Death Wish, September 6, 2007
By Daniel Quinn (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
The previous reviewer of this book is obviously not a very careful reader. "Wish" is not "Sentence." The famous Bronson film was based on DEATH WISH and has no collection with DEATH SENTENCE, which is just out as a film starring Kevin Baoon.

I was very disappointed in this book!I have always said that the books were better than the movies they made from them, but in this case it's not true! Read more
