Product Description
It is the autumn of the year 1389, and King Richard is on the throne of England, a land still haunted by the memory of the Black Death. And at Caerafon, on the Welsh borders, vampires break through from another world and steal the battleaxe whose magic powers had protected those living at the Castle. The plague returns, and all will die unless the axe can be recovered before the next full moon. Just one person can save them. That person is Hal, a shy thirteen year-old boy with a stammer, whose best friend is Rilla, his hawk. Will Hal find the courage to pursue the vampires into a strange and dangerous world? What will he find there? Will he recover the axe in time?
About the Author
For nearly four years Richard lived with Monica, his much- loved hawk. Monica spent most days on her perch in the kitchen, flying with him when he went out and taking rabbits and other game. Then one stormy night she was blown away down the valley where they lived and never returned, So Richard determined to write a book about the world where Monica (renamed Rilla in the book) might have found herself. This is that book. Richard lives with his wife, Tessa, in a moated manor house and has four daughters, now grown-up and married and each with two children. His eldest daughter, Antonia, produced the illustrations for the book. Richard is now working on the sequel to the Face in the Sky.
