Product Description

Can sugar really be as addictive as cigarettes? Sugarettes, by Dr. Scott Olson ND, explores our obsession with sugar and its resulting health consequences. The average person eats an astonishing half-pound of sugar a day. For many of us, we don’t eat that much sugar because we want to, but because we have to—much like any other addict. While the taste might be sweet to the tongue, the effects of this sugary compulsion are not. Sugar addiction is a contributing factor to the worldwide epidemic of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity and other health problems. With such a tempting enemy, is it any wonder we are losing the health wars? Dr. Scott’s Sugarettes forces us to look at our sugar addiction and what consequences it has for our health. It details specific and actionable steps every individual can take to master their diets and take control of their addictive relationship with sugar, empowering consumers with the tools to change their lives and their heath.

About the Author

Dr. Scott Olson is a Naturopathic doctor, expert in alternative medicine, author, and medical researcher. Dr. Scott has spent his whole life researching optimal diets for humans. Spurred on by his patients’ struggles with sugar addiction, he was determined to discover just how addictive and harmful sugar can be and ways to overcome that addiction. When he is not researching, writing, or coaching patients on their health, he can be found outdoors running, riding his bike, and enjoying the mountains of Colorado, where he lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great motivational read, November 19, 2008
By Scott Nesbett "Scott" (Centennial, CO) - See all my reviews
I like to read motivational books on eating healthy and was lucky enough to get this book. Dr. Olson's style of writing kept me captive as I sat and drank my coffee (with sugar.) After finishing the book instead of feeling guilty about eating sugar, I find I'm more "aware" of when I consume it. I think Dr. Olson is surely on to something when he writes about the fact that there are no "real" or "official" studies that link sugar to obesity or diabetes...similar to smoking vs. cancer (in the 50's and 60's.)

Having a grandmother who had diabetes and required insulin shots every day, I never knew what it was actually doing for her. This book cleared that up for me and explained it in such a way I actually understood without having to re-read that chapter again...meaning it was written with language I (and most non-scientists) could understand.

I'm glad I read this...and it sticks in the back of my mind when my grocery cart starts gravitating toward high-glycemic foods in the store. Great motivation for anyone who is trying to eat a more healthy diet.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm a sugar addict!, October 27, 2008
By Chuck Passaglia (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews
I just read Sugarettes by Dr. Scott Olson and I liked the book for two reasons. First, Sugarettes helped me identify and start to address my sugar addiction. Yes, I am a lifelong sugar addict: From fruit juice as a baby, to Frosted Flakes as a young man, to anything sweet goes as an adult. Sugarettes is a quick read and, thankfully for the non-medical reader, keeps scientific information at a coherent level of understanding. Second, and maybe more importantly, I think Dr. Olson is on to something more with Sugarettes. Dr. Olson highlights the glaring silence by government regulators and health care associations regarding sugar abuse in our society. I find it odd, in a society that longs for days gone by and the lessons of the "greatest generation," that we haven't explored our risky, unconstrained love affair with sugar and sugar substitutes. Reading Sugarettes, I'm left to wonder whether all unhealthy roads lead to sugar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading this makes it easier to quit sugar, November 16, 2008
I was shocked to learn so many things in this book but, I think the most surprising is how fast sugar adds up and how damaging it is. Dr. Olson made it easy to understand and fun and different to read. It really helps saying no to the kids when I know what's happening when they eat sugar! Thanks, Dr. Olson!
