Finally! This coffee table book will make your guests question their dinner choices. It's an encyclopedia and a history lesson whomped up together. The depth of knowledge here is astounding. This thing is hardcore, crammed with tons of information about the foundations of horror, not just the artwork of it. This book is a small-text deep dive into every cool thing about horror books, movies, and comics. The lavish, full-page depictions are so much fun. Then there are movie posters. So many movie posters. I haven't finished it yet. There's too much. (Joe Crowe, http://www.RevolutionSF.com, http://www.twitter.com/RevolutionSF)

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Paul Campbell on November 6, 2015
I love the combination of art and text; illustrated children's books like Neil Gaiman, Chris Riddell, Tony DeTerlizzi and Brian Selznick but also non-fiction reference books like the three volume Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction of the 20th Century that came out about 15 years ago and the superb companion volume to last year's exhibition at the British Library, 'Terror and Wonder: the Gothic Imagination'.

Now, I'll admit, when I first heard of 'The Art of Horror' I wasn't actually interested: "Oh great," I thought sarcastically, "another movie genre book full of film stills - whoop-dee-doo!" You see, I love modern science fiction novels and horror short stories; I have, however, just about zero interest in horror movies. Modern Hollywood horror? Torture porn. Yawn. Old horror movies up to the '70s? Sorry, it was the mid-'80s by the time I was a teenager so absolutely none of that stuff strikes any kind of nostalgic resonance with me: it's just ham acting, dodgy makeup and polystyrene sets.

'The Art of Horror' though, happily, is not yet another movie book but a glorious celebration of artwork. Oh, don't get me wrong, there's no shortage of wonderfully garish movie posters (which I suspect are probably way better than the movies they were promoting ever were), but there's also hundreds of book and magazine and comics illustrations, often reproduced from the original paintings, minus the finished book or magazine's typography. The work presented covers every possible style and every era, from classical paintings from hundreds of years ago right up through every decade of the 20th century and as recently as this very year. Indeed, there are several items of artwork showcased here for the very first time.
