Editorial Reviews

Product Description

In this warm and appealing prose poem, Patricia Godwin skillfully explores children's emotions as they may emerge on any given day, joyous sometimes, even jubilant, occasionally sad and lonely. The boy who feels orange today equates moods with all the colors of the rainbow:

I like yellow days.
Mr. Happy Sun lights up all the corners of my secret fort.
Joel, my best friend, plays with me all day.
Purple days are a muddle.
Sometimes I feel bright blazing purple. Sometimes I feel gentle sad violet.
I don't know where I lost my shoes, and
It wasn't me that left the light on.

Kitty Macaulay is completely in tune with her text. Her lovely, loose pen and ink and water color illustrations are fine, sensitive work. Her bold reversals of "proper proportions" and her deft introduction of mythical creatures into scenes of domestic life will delight children and adults alike.

About the Author

Patricia Godwin was born in Peru. Her family returned to Canada when she was nine years old. She graduated from the University of British Columbia and became an elementary school teacher. She lives with her husband and two sons in Coquitlam, B.C.

Kitty Macaulay was born in Ottawa and grew up in the country. She spent much of her twenties in art school, traveling across the country with her musician husband, visiting foreign lands and raising their daughter, Jenny. Kitty completed her art education at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. She paints whimsical expressions and abstract art designs on canvas and onto animals carved from wood. She has also tried her hand at developing greeting cards. Her illustrations have appeared in Cricket and Spider magazines.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Feel Orange Today - Wonderful Book!, December 7, 1999
By Walter Cox (The Lone Star State) - See all my reviews
Someone gave us this book as a baby gift and we've been reading it to our son for some time now. He really enjoys it; it provides a nice description of feelings in a context in which a child can comprehend. Our son is too young to understand the definitions of emotions, as he is only 16 months old, but it has a very peaceful rhythm to it, is very beautifully illustrated, and really holds his attention. It's a great book to add to your child's library, as it is one that can be used through ages 4-5 years old, since that's about when they might understand more about feelings and emotions.
