Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Ages 4-7. How many alphabet books do we need? At least one more: this one, which resonates with the wit and creativity of Canadian photojournalist Milich. Inspired by daily walks with his daughter Hannah, Milich searched Toronto for hidden geometrics--letters buried in everyday places. From window frames in the shape of As to steel-welded Zs that support a bridge, he finds and documents them--in black and white, highlighting each letter in stop-sign red. Most children will pick a favorite letter, but each picture is a wonder and every letter a clear, playful image to consider and behold. Kelly Halls

Review
Zoran Milich has produced a photographic find-the-letter alphabet book ideal for this younger age group, which loves to find letter shapes in everyday objects.

[This is a useful addition to any collection of alphabet books and one that can be used to encourage closer viewing of everyday surroundings. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delving for knowledge within the city, April 8, 2001
By Jelena V. (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
In this book by Zoran Milich, children are captivated by a vast array of vivid images, which draw them into the realms of the city. Within the city, their quest for knowledge begins. Children learn the alphabet through the recognition of letters that exist in the forms of objects within the city. By acknowledging the presence of the letters of the alphabet within their surroundings, children can quickly embrace and master the alphabet, as well as apply this newborn form of instruction in other areas to create an infinite learning experience. This skill serves to enhance a child's inquisitive nature as well. While observing a four year old viewing the book, I witnessed a child overcome with astonishment. He not only enjoyed locating the letters within the pictures, but also was also intrigued to find that letters were present within city structures. I feel this book is an essential tool in not only teaching the alphabet to children, but to enhancing their perceptiveness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual ABC's, April 5, 2001
The thing about kids' ABC books is that they are mostly all the same: pretty illustrations of common objects; apples to zebras. This book takes a different and perhaps more challenging approach for children. The alphabet is "seen" all around us "in" photographs of objects. It is a fun visual romp through the city, finding the form of letters everywhere. All it takes is a little imagination and you can start off where Zoran Milich ends, finding alphabet forms wherever you look. Not for very young children perhaps but perfect for an inquisitive four or five year old.
