Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Although this volume is filled with cartoon illustrations, the text is well written and full of factual information, covering topics such as REM sleep, nightmares, sleepwalking, dreams, hibernation, and sleep disorders. The text is loosely organized by topic (stages of sleep, tossing and turning, etc.). The writing style is breezy and conversational, but focused enough to be complete and accurate. Page backgrounds vary in washed-out primary colors with plenty of illustrations of snoozing people in pajamas and animals in nightcaps.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. The title sets the bar pretty high, but this book's funny illustrations and lively layout keep it from becoming, well . . . a snoozer. Romanek includes a wide variety of information, covering everything from REM sleep and yawning to sleep cycles, snoring, and dreams. Nothing is explored very deeply, but curious children will find plenty to interest them and answer their questions. A few experimental activities appear in sidebars. There's one obvious misstep: the author suggests that Edison invented the lightbulb after 1910 (it was invented in 1879). But, on the whole, this volume in the Mysterious You series is a fascinating, kid-friendly look at a subject that's much more complicated than it seems. Todd Morning

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and educational, April 9, 2004
By A Customer
This is the most fascinating book you'll ever read about sleep. You won't be able to put it down. It is really a book for all ages. The illustrations are fun. The information is, what's that word again, "fascinating". Ever think of milk as helping you sleep, well if you drank 30 glasses, maybe! If you live to be 70 you'll have spent 23 years sleeping. Mozart was inspired by the music he heard in his dreams. Birds take mini-naps of 30 seconds or so while flying. That's how they can fly non-stop during long migrations. Albert Einstein was at his best when he slept 10 hours a day. Winston Churchill did almost the opposite. Giraffes and elephants need 3 hours of sleep; cats need 16 and bats need 20 hours. What is the record for staying awake the longest? Read the book; its fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great read-aloud, October 13, 2005

My 10-year old son and I are always on the lookout for non-fiction books with the right amount of information, illustration and humor. This one nails it! He was fascinated to learn about the quirks of sleep, and I learned some things too. Terrific!
