"... far and away the best of the Canadian government texts I've seen." -- David J. Climenhaga, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

Product Description

The Canadian Regime, third edition An Introduction to Parliamentary Government in Canada By Patrick Malcolmson & Richard Myers

This clear and readable account of Canada's political institutions has now been updated to reflect developments up to and beyond the 2004 Canadian federal election.

Focusing more on principles than on arcane detail, the authors explain why our institutions are the way they are. In so doing, they improve the reader's ability to assess the implications of various proposals for reform of our institutions (such as electing senators, recall of MPs, and review of Supreme Court nominees).

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide ot Canadian Government & Politics, April 17, 2007
By B. Wesley Adams II (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've long had an interest in Canada, but have not been able to find a good intro guide to Canadian government, until now. "The Canadian Regime" is a very good book covering Canadian political institutions and the history and rationale behind them. It is a thin book (the actual text is less than 200 pages) written in the clear language of a textbook, that readers who do not have a political science background will understand. It is also accessible to Canadians, Americans, and other English readers.

The only reason why I'm not giving this book 5 stars is that I would have like to have seen more on provincial institutions and politics. It does, however, provide an in-depth anaylsis of the federal level. The British North American Act (Constitution Act of 1867) and the Constitution Act of 1982 are included in the appendix
