Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

For decades the eminent Moore has been one of the best-known popular astronomy writers in Britain; he intends this work "strictly for newcomers." Half of Moore's guide consists of maps of the constellations, and the other half contains the categories of celestial objects visible through binoculars or small telescopes. The book opens with the basics needed to profit from that information: knowing how to navigate the celestial vault. Definitions of right ascension and declination in hand, Moore points readers to the moon, then to the sun, the planets, the stars, and nebulae. Instructing on where to find these objects, Moore assures his readers that acquiring this knowledge is not as formidable as it appears and provides an imaginatively satisfying experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory "field guide" to Astronomy, June 16, 2009
By T. Cole (Prince William Co., Virginia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I would highly recommend Sir Patrick Moore's Guide to Stars and Planets for anyone looking for a well-rounded introdution to the field of Astronomy and star watching. He covers most aspects of the subject in clear terms with excellent maps & diagrams, such that the newcomer will find it informative, and the veteran astronomer/star watcher can appreciate its pocket size, simplicity, and wealth of information (considering its size). Considering its affordability, this is a great way to introduce someone to the field, encourage a neophyte, provide a handy field reference, or even give as a gift!

Do note that it is not updated to include some of the very recent discoveries or changes (e.g., Pluto as a dwarf planet, discovery of Eris & Haumea).

All the same, this is a great buy, for what its worth.
