Editorial Reviews

Product Description
At once glamorous and loathsome, vampires are among the most memorable figures in the literature and film of the horror genre. These undead beings, possessed of supernatural powers of metamorphosis and hypnotism, stalk the night for the blood of the living. They have fascinated and terrified generations of writers and readers. Here are 18 bone-chilling tales of these bloodsucking creatures of the night, written by some of the most distinguished writers of the genre.

From premier writers including Anne Rice and Bram Stoker, the stories in this collection represent some of the finest horror writing spanning the past two centuries. Here are gothic melodramas set in Russia and Germany, as well as more modern twists on the vampire legend that take place in contemporary England and the United States. These are tales of decadence, lust, and loathing; they capture the dark side of the human psyche, dead and undead. Making few concessions to the squeamish, the tales in this collection will keep readers awake at night.

Stories include:
• "Dracula's Guest" by Bram Stoker
• "Phantoms" by Ivan Turgenev
• "The Lovely Lady" by D.H. Lawrence
• "The Master of Rampling Gate" by Anne Rice
• "The Undead" by Robert Bloch

Each of these finely-crafted tales is guaranteed to leave readers with goosebumps.

A foreward from the late actor Peter Cushing, who starred in numerous vampire and horror films, is a fitting introduction to this collection of horrifying and captivating tales.

Prepare to be terrified as you enjoy some of the best vampire stories ever written ... if you dare. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good and broad collection, February 3, 2007
This review is from: Vampire Stories (Hardcover)
I first picked up this book while browsing at a book store and was so taken in by the very first story, "Phantoms" that I had to buy it.
The book covers the entire spectrum of vampire stories in all ways. Stories first published over 140 years ago as well as modern work appear in this collection.
There are also alot of original takes on the vampire story, moving away from the tried and tired stories.
Some of the stories are a bit long and may seem to drag on, but with any collection, not every story will be great.

If you're a fan of vampire folklore and/or horror you should definitly take a look at this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most importantly it has Master of Rampling Gate - Anne Rice, November 12, 2002

This review is from: Vampire Stories (Hardcover)
I probably got this as a ... remainder when I worked at ... around 1995, or maybe it was regular price, not important. This is a collection of short vampire stories by different authors. I don't know where else Anne Rice's first short story "The Master of Rampling Gate" is published other than the oop graphic novel I was lucky to find a long time ago. This is a must have for the vampire fanatic who's just getting into vampires and wants some tastes from classic to modern. Honestly I have only read the Anne Rice story. Other things in the book include Dracula's Guest (Bram Stoker), Close Behind Him (John Windam), and a bunch more by authors I don't really know any other stories by.

Mine is published in 1993 which is probably the original publication, ISBN 1555219004.
