The field of public management has been developing since the late 1970s and now needs to distinguish itself as a separate area of study from public administration. Here, 32 authors contribute to the clarification of the content, meaning, and prospects of public management. While not a collection of all the papers from the National Public Management Research Conference held in September 1991 at Syracuse University, this work does contain versions of some of the presentations given there. Because of the large number of authors and the broad coverage of topics, this book's somewhat uneven flow between chapters is only partially compensated by the editor's introductions to the various sections. Nevertheless, this is an important contribution to an emerging field. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.
