Product Description

Like the fate of so many American Impressionist painters, Colin Campbell Cooper's career was often overlooked. With this first in-depth study of the artist, Cooper's career is finally illuminated, revealing a virtuosity and breadth of subject matter unique among his contemporaries. Originally from Philadelphia, Cooper was a student of Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before moving to Paris where he attended the Academie Julian and the academies Delacluse and Viti. It was in Paris where his enduring interest in architecture began with mediaeval architectural monuments, especially Gothic cathedrals. This interest in architecture developed into the theme for which his art would forever be associated. Relocating to California in 1921 led to his fascination with West Coast architecture with its Spanish influences, and his later work also reflects his love of the Western landscape. Whether painting the East or the West, Cooper was lauded as a significant Impressionist artist who

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the life and art of Colin Campbell Cooper, July 21, 2007
The work has been a long time in coming. Colin Campbell Cooper was recognized as one of the great American Impressionists in his day. He was elected to the National Academy, his work won many awards and was welcome in any show or gallery. He painted the skyscrapers and important buildings in New York City, the beautiful landscapes of California and was a world traveler painting all over the world. In spite of this, he is overlooked today. This work will help to re-introduce Cooper to many who are not aware of his greatness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A key acquisition any art library needs to add., February 7, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
If you don't readily recognize the name of Impressionist painter Colin Campbell Cooper, it's because his career was often overlooked - to the point that this catalog is his first in-depth study, and as such is an essential addition to any comprehensive Impressionist art history collection. Here a biography of his life blends with full-page color paintings and detailed discussions of his influences and art. A key acquisition any art library needs to add.
