Review

“In The Earthwise Herbal, Matthew Wood has revived the richness, depth, and dignity of the herbal medicine of the old masters, while at the same time endowing it with a new cosmopolitan, cross-cultural flavor that lifts it to a genuinely planetary level.”
—Rudolph Ballentine, MD, author of Radical Healing

“Matthew Wood propounds with great clarity, wisdom, and his own experience the gifts the earth in its wisdom has given us in the form of amazing medicines for almost all our ills, whether of body, mind, emotion, personality, or constitution.”
—Anne McIntyre, herbalist (NIMH)

"Matthew Wood has put his over 25 years of experience as a practicing herbalist into the heart of this book, giving us all something worthy of study and reference, no doubt for generations to come. His understanding of the spirit of herbalism, along with his love of the craft, is contagious—I sincerely hope many people will catch a good dose of his knowledge!"

Product Description

In this companion volume to The Earthwise Herbal: A Complete Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants, Matthew Wood, an expert herbalist who has used medicinal herbs with tens of thousands of patients over a twenty-five-year career, provides detailed descriptions of New World (North American) herbs and their uses. Organized as a materia medica (names and descriptions of herbs/plants are listed alphabetically), the book explains the use of the whole plant (not just “active ingredients”) in the treatment of the whole person and describes symptoms and conditions that the plants have been successful in treating—from digestive ailments, headaches, and high blood pressure to asthma, skin rashes, and allergies, to name a few.

Wood, who has systematically studied ancient and traditional herbal literature, takes a historical view and presents information in a thoughtful, engaging, nontechnical style. In addition, he provides remarkable case studies as well as insight into the “logic” of each plant—its current and past usage, pharmacological constituents, and other elements that together produce a comprehensive portrait of each herb.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best in Herbals!, June 21, 2009
This Guide to New World Medicinal Plants and its sister companion book are simply 2 of the best herbals to be found anywhere. Chocked full of information, including scientific information, details, and experiences not found anywhere else, no herbalist should be without them. Having already purchased The Complete Guide to the Old World Medicinal Plants, I pre-ordered its New World Sister companion and waited months for its availability, And it was worth the wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, thorough guide for the herb lover..., June 19, 2009
By A. Wolf "bookangel" (Hamburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews

This book is a comprehensive guide to non-toxic North American herbs. People who already have a lot of knowledge and experience with herbs will get the most benefit from this book. Some of it will be 'over the head' of the novice. This book is laid out like an encyclopedia, alphabetical by herb name. If you want to look up herbs that help with a specific condition, there is an alphabetical index of health conditions in the back. Each herb is described, including the taste and dosage to try. There is also a list of conditions (physical and emotional) that are helped by the herb. Sometimes a sketch of the herb is included, and at times the story of a patient who benefited from the herb is added. I found this book to be useful. I only wish there were more pictures or sketches included!

This is the second in Matthew Woods "Herbals" and allows us a privileged view into Herbs of America from a maestro on the subject who is also a native American. Matthew's books are highly professional and at the same time personable and readable, full of anecdote and insight. To read these is to step into Matthew's world, full of magic and healing and connection with the spirit.
