Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Certified speech-language pathologist Martin has written an excellent book for parents concerned about their children's speech and language development. The book provides answers to the 50 most common questions about children's speech and includes strategies for parents as well as answers to each question. Upon first reading, the question-and-answer format appears to make it difficult to locate specific speech problems, but this is corrected by the very thorough index. The text's six parts address stuttering and fluency issues, articulation issues, listening and auditory processing skills, and issues of the voice and then provide resources for parents. Martin's writing style is clear and engaging, making this slim volume a quick, easy read. Recommended for all health sciences collections that serve the general public.?Stacey Hathaway, Fordham Health Sciences Lib., Wright State Univ., Dayton, Ohio

Product Description

All children go through periods of saying "ting" for "thing" or "feets" for "feet," and no two children learn to speak on exactly the same schedule. This informative, reassuring guide helps parents and teachers identify normal speech development and potential problems, with advice on when and where to seek help, how to support your child's prescribed speech program, and how to lessen the risk of speech or language difficulties. Easy-to-understand question-and-answer format; guidelines for assessing your child's speech and language development; practical strategies for coping with stuttering, poor listening or memory skills, vocal fatigue or hoarseness, ear infections and hearing and much more; and ways to enhance speech and language development that both you and your child will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, Terrific Format, September 15, 2000

This book will be at tremendous help to any parent wondering if their child has any sort of speech problem. The book is organized well, broken down by the various sorts of speech problems, so it's quite easy for a lay person to focus on their concerns without having to wade through lots of irrelevant information. I came to the book with the same question: Does my child have a speech problem and this book helped me find the answer and led me to the help we needed. I strongly recommend this book for any parent with that same question. It will help you find your answer and help you see that you are not alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful resource book for ALL parents of young children, November 5, 1999
By A Customer
Does My Child Have a Speech Problem is a terrific recource book for parents, as well as teachers. As both, I find myself referring to it often as my children and their language grow and develop. I am using it in the classroom to further assist my abilities in helping to identify and refer students to the Speech and Language Department. I highly recommend this book to all parents and teachers.

Wonderful book! This book is a great resource for all parents, not just those concerned about a potential problem in their childs'speech development. Knowing the guidelines for normal speech and language development have reassured me about my childrens' speech patterns. Question and answer format is easy to read and understand. I would recommend this book to everyone!
