Product Description
This book is a how-to manual for teachers working with struggling readers. The book's instructional model can be used with students from the pre-reading level through the secondary level. It is written in an easy-to-understand language, and the methods and strategies described are all evidence-based and/or identified as best practices in the field. It also includes information about electronic reading, since many of today's students read electronic (i.e., internet, e-mail) literature. The book is based on a three-legged model for specialized reading instruction for hard-to-teach students. The three legs are 1) the skill areas of reading that must be taught, 2) the six stages of reading that students pass through to attain adult literacy, and 3) the strategic explicit teaching (SET) methods to use with students. The model is unique because it acknowledges that reading skills are not developed in isolation and presents an integrated plan for teaching reading, language, and cognitive processing skills. Appendices include a glossary, a list of reading proficiency tests, a list of programs and games for teaching reading, and a reading record form to use with students.
