From School Library Journal
YA-A book that is manageable in both size and focus. Although the brief opening chapter is entitled "About Whales," it is really a general introduction to all three groups of mammals. Each species is described concisely, including its possible variations, range, behavior, and look-alikes. The boxed "Field Marks" enable whale watchers to identify quickly the telltale characteristics of each species. Black-and-white photographs portray the animals engaging in numerous activities. Clear, simplified charts illustrate body and head shapes. Useful appendixes include pertinent organizations, relevant locations, helpful information, and a discussion to inspire novice watchers. An effective introduction.

This book is handy for those actually taking whale-watching tours, but it could prove indispensable for those who find themselves afloat without benefit of trained naturalists. --
Cape Cod TimesThis handy book would add interest to a sailing expedition to the Channel Islands or just an ordinary trip to the beach. --
Los Angeles TimesThis is a useful book for recreational whale watchers. --
