Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Striped bass - in fresh and salt water - are one of the world's greatest gamefish, and The Striped Bass is the fullest, most authoritative, most helpful book ever written on the species. In this fully revised and greatly expanded edition, it becomes the essential book for all striped bass enthusiasts. Nick Karas has spent season after season in pursuit of the fish - and he has read and analyzed research reports from more than twenty states and several provinces. The result is a book no striped bass fisherman will want to be without.Part One, "The Fish," offers a complete portrait of the fish itself - its history, its distribution and migration, its biology, its reproductive cycle, varieties of the bass on the East Coast, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Coast, and in fresh water, and the management of the populations of this great fish.Part Two, "Fishing Techniques," takes a detailed look at early striped bass fishing and fishermen, and then offers practical, proven techniques for fishing from the surf, from boats, from bank, pier, jetty, and bridge; it looks carefully at the growing popularity of fly rodding for stripers, fishing at night, and how to catch the striped bass in fresh water.Part Three, "Tackle for Catching Striped Bass," is a thorough look at the best "Rods, Reels, Lines, and Hooks," live and natural baits, artificial lures, accessory equipment, bass boats, and the most innovative and practical beach vehicles. There is even a crisp and interesting section on how best to cook the delicious striped bass.In all, the twenty-eight chapters in this book offer a comprehensive look at every aspect of the striped bass. The Striped Bass is a book that no one who fishes for this great gamefish will want to be without. (61/4 X 91/4, 500 pages, b&w photos, maps, illustrations, charts)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fishing and Fisheries Information Combined - 4 Serious Fmen, February 21, 1996
By A Customer
This book is filled with both great information on fishing, but also some fairly technical information on the striped bass fishery, its history, the physiogomy of the striper and the current state of the striped bass as game fish. Very well compiled and presented.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything (and more) to know about the Striped Bass, August 17, 2000
By "voorheesmike" (Voorhees, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This is a book for the serious striped bass fisherman. It covers everything from the history of striped bass fishing to migration patterns to tackle and techniques. It can be a little tedious at times with the amount of technical detail and history provided; however, it is required reading for someone who really wants to understand everything about the striped bass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lost in the tangle, May 24, 2001
By David Hewitt (Gloucester, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Karas has made a bold attempt at laying out the history and biology of the striped bass as well as a guide for the avid striper fishermen. However, by the end of the first chapter it is evident the book needs a good editing job. Not being sarcastic, the sentence structure (or lack thereof) and grammatical/spelling errors make reading more a chore than anything else. It is certainly a surprise given that this is the second edition of the volume. The work contains a lot of good information and is a great primer about the fish, but desperately needs an attentive eye for detail. The section on the biology and management of the species also abounds with Karas' personal opinions, many of which may not be appropriate or well-founded. Karas holds a great love for the fish and often allows that love to cloud his thinking in relation to the environment and natural systems in which the fish resides. The world does not revolve around stripers, much as we would like it too. All in all, a good starter if you are a very patient reader.
