Amazon.com Review
At last! A thorough, easy-to-understand, step-by-step, how-to manual on using Photoshop and Corel for making the beautiful and compact Web graphics that you've been drooling over. As of today (May 7th, 1996) this is the finest book I've seen on the topic. I try to stay calm when I write recommendations, but I've lost my composure, and my excitement is best encapsulated in a single phrase: "buy this book!"

Review
Creating Great Web Graphics focuses solely on how to create quality PC graphics for World Wide Web sites. Through step-by-step instructions readers learn how to create icons, type, background tiles, and images that work well within Web protocols. McCanna uses the popular PC applications "Photoshop" and Corel's "PhotoPaint" to address the major challenges of creating graphics for the Web -- creating low-resolution, small files that load quickly but look professional on all major computer platforms (Mac, UNIX, PC). In a straightforward, humorous style, McCanna teaches essential web graphics tricks such as anti-aliasing files so they display smoothly on low-resolution computer monitors, using transparency to crate non-rectangular buttons and images, or using beveled edges to give depth to icons. Expert color advice includes color indexing instructions to crate the smallest possible files, and a hex code color chart for quick reference when creating website pages. Creating Great Web Graphics is a high-powered, user-friendly reference and is highly recommended for every website developer's reference shelf! -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Web graphics books in print, May 13, 2000
By "marble" (Wheaton, Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
With McCanna's 1996 book, I was able to create a drop shadow and many other effects before they were macros on later versions of Corel Photo Paint. This is an excellent book for learning the princibles of setting a color transparent and creating tiled background images. Despite the limitations imposed by print matter when teaching Web graphics, this book overcomes that with its completeness and friendly, conversational writing style. A winner!

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent Corel PhotoPaint web techniques tutorial, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
If you are a newbie to web graphics, are willing to invest in a serious bitmap graphics tool for the Windows environment but not double the price for the premiere tool then go out and get Corel PhotoPaint 7 or 8, read and practice the tutorials and a used copy of this book. The book serves as a recipe book of various techniques applicable to the creation of Web graphics. The book emphasizes 1st generation web graphics which are now outdated but the techniques are an excellent springboard to more advanced methods. A beginners book for sure but well-written; pass it along to other novices if you have outgrown it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner Nice reference for experienced also, March 7, 2004
By A Customer
Laurie's book is tailored for people who are new to creating web graphics. As such, her book is friendly, inspiring, and very well thought out, and exceptionally easy to learn from.
I've had this book for many years now, and constantly refer back to it when I can't recall exactly how to create a seamless tile so that it looks just right. :) 5 Stars and Kudos to Laurie for a job well done for those of us who are graphically challenged.
