Product Description

Much of the information on the Internet is compressed or encoded in some way to help the network transmit it from an external site to your computer. Far too often, they arrive with some mysterious format that is impossible for your computer to handle without some help from you. There are dozens of formats out there, but the main ones you'll encounter are MIME, UUENCODE, and ZIP.

After you identify the file format, you still have to find some way to handle it. MIME, UUENCODE and ZIP teaches you about the formats themselves, how to recognize them, and how to make handling them as easy as opening a file on your desktop.

Included with the book, you'll get a number of utilities to handle nearly anything you'll encounter, as well as Internet sites for additional utilities. The bonus disk contains shareware versions of WinZip, PKZIP, and a Windows 95 shell extension for decoding files from Funduc Software.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for the Learned., April 17, 1998
By fabulous use of illustrations and a simple vocabulary, Fernandez has come up with a book that can enlighten the masses of techo-rookies that are invading the internet on an ongoing basis. One word of caution though. Despite the lack of books about internet standards, this book does not touch on software development. It's title may be misleading; it is not for engineers, but for end users. End users - BUY! It is an excellent reference...
