Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
All commercial systems involve sending information from a client computer (operated by a customer) to a server computer (operated by a vendor). The standard that's evolved to allow such transactions is called Common Gateway Interface (CGI). On top of its useful architectural discussions, CGI for Commerce does a fine job of explaining CGI data streams--something you're going to have to understand if you want to build programs that extract useful data from such streams. Other excellent CGI books exist, but none offer the kind of commercial orientation that's found here.

Product Description
One of the biggest opportunities to reach new customers lies on the Web. More than ever, companies with a Web site want to do more than just offer their customers information about products -- they want to sell their products on the Web. CGI for Commerce provides you with a step-by-step guide to installing a ready-made Web Store application as well as detailed information on how it works. Also included are numerous examples to demonstrate the features and flexibility of the store. In no time at all, you'll be selling your products to the online universe.

From an enhanced HTML catalogue, where users just click on a button to buy an item while browsing, to a complete database-backed application -- all the code is included on the CD-ROM ready to install on your Web server. Your Cyberstore will also be able to take advantage of advanced browser features like frames, JavaScript, and VBScript to enhance the virtual shopping experience. Example code for these exciting features is also included on the CD-ROM.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Free Code, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This book is for anyone who knows some PERL and wants to save days or weeks coding a shopping cart/ordering system. It could most accurately be described as a detailed, line by line description of a complex (but NOT overly complicated) free software application which is provided on the book's cd-rom.

Just remember that you must know some basic PERL and have already set up a few simple websites on a UNIX server, otherwise you will be lost. If you want to learn PERL, this is as good a project as any, but remember that you will be thumbing through a PERL book at the same time. If you are an intermediate level PERL hacker, you should have the basic demo application up and running in a couple of hours, max.

The program is very good and extremely easy to customize to your exact needs. The book is marred by some typos, inconsistancies and embarrasing grammatical errors, but is an absolutely invaluable resource for anyone wanting an excellent, cheap and flexible PERL based CGI shopping cart on their website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good information but written for computer geeks, July 20, 1998
Very nice information if I want to go to programmers school. Needs more of a what if content. No real trouble shooting. It has taken me almost 6 months to understand and it will take another six to setup on my server.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book about CGI so far, covers all topics., June 27, 1998
By A Customer
It covers graphic generation, file access, DB management, security transaction. E-mail access... Enough topics, good details. There is a shopping-cart example, gives good reference for writing complex cgi program.
