Product Description
You and your spouse have just been screened for that important posting overseas. Now it's all systems go. But HOLD IT! Who screened the children? Raising happy, well-adjusted children is always a challenge for parents, regardless of where they live. But overseas, parenting issues are magnified because traditional life supports are absent. Parents, trust your instincts. But first, read this book, because it offers sound advice on some critical issues, such as: Do your children have a learning disability that won't be catered to by an international school? Are you setting them up for loss of self-esteem or an unsuccessful adjustment? Are you helping them to appreciate and discriminate among the new experiences, and relate them to what they know about their own culture? Robin Pascoe, author of Culture Shock-A Parent's Guide, knows what it's like to be a traveling wife and mother. Her children have been on the move since they were born, and her family has lived in a community of traveling families. The advice in this book is the result of her cumulative experience, as well as consultation with child psychologists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it, January 2, 2001
By A Customer
What a fantastic book. I wish I had found this book before my husband's first assignment.

If you know in advance the changes that your relationship and your kids are likely to through before you go abroad, you will be able to put things in perspective as they happen, and plan to navigate the bumps ahead. I've lived ten years abroad and I found Robin's observations bang-on.

Her writing style is delightful and entertaining, and she will lift a great deal of stress from your shoulders. I'm now living happily in Egypt and this book is constantly on loan to friends here.

Her book on "A wife's perspective" is also good, but if you have kids you'll find most of the relationship material well encapsulated here, so you don't need both. Oh - and don't forget to check out her website.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview, June 10, 2000
By Campbell C. Dunson (south carolina/brazil) - See all my reviews
We are getting ready to move and taking a 1-year-old. I found the nuggets of info in A Parent's Guide really helpful. It's sort of general (like explaining what a third culture kid is), but a really good start on research for parents raising children overseas.
