Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Unless in 1986 you discovered Nepali Delights, the first edition of this book, it's unlikely that you have a Nepali cookbook in your collection. This compendium of family recipes from more than 50 contributors provides a sampling of the favorite dishes that make up this cuisine, influenced by both Tibetan and, more familiar to American readers, East Indian cooking. Grains are the base of the diet, mustard oil and ghee are used for cooking, and chiles, garlic, ginger, and cumin are favorite flavorings. It's too bad that there are very few recipe notes to give more background to the dishes, but this is a unique resource in any case. For larger and special collections.

Review
"A unique compendium of family recipes." --Library Journal

The Nepal Cookbook is a treasury of recipes from the members of the Association of Nepalis in the Americas representing the best of authentic Nepali cuisine. From festival dishes to simple everyday favorites, the recipes included here reflect the many facets of Nepal's colorful and diverse cultures. Nepali food, which is simple to prepare and subtle in flavor, is influenced by the cuisines of both India and Tibet. Here are recipes for all the elements of a full-course Nepali meal: appetizers, soups and lentils, vegetables, meats, pickles and chutneys, rice and breads, and desserts. The most commonly used flavorings include cumin , red and green chilies, garlic, ginger, szechwan pepper, cilantro, and scallions. Special cooking methods and ingredients unfamiliar to a Western audience are fully explained. The Nepal Cookbook is an ideal reference for gourmet clubs and any chef with an adventurous nature. A terrific addition to any kitchen bookshelf! -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Current Nepalese cooking possible with American ingrediants., November 3, 1999
By A Customer
I like this book especially for the straight-forward simplicity of the recipes and, especially, for the great tasting food.

It is good for both vegetarians and omnivores!

Several cooks contributed so the cook gets a variety of styles, probably from different parts of the american Nepalese society.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yum!, May 29, 2003
I actually bought this book in Nepal after serving for 2 yrs there as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I knew I'd get a hankering for some home cooked Nepali specialties once I got home. I haven't made the majority of the recipes in it, but it was certainly worth the cost of the book for the ones I have made, especially the spicy fried pork cubes which I make quite often. Kasto meetho lagyo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Nepali Cooking, November 8, 1999
By A Customer
My Nepali friend says the book does good representation of Nepali cooking although there were a few recipes she couldn't recognize. There are traditional Nepali dishes along with Indian and British-influenced ones (e.g. chop). This is not for people who care about pretty pictures, but for people like me who would rather have MORE RECIPES.
