Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Organized by questions phrased the way a child might pose them, Everything Dog: What Kids Really Want to Know About Dogs by Marty Crisp answers a plethora of queries, from "Do dogs come from dinosaurs?" to "Do dogs cry?" (No, the author says, "They use body language [tail between legs, head down] or sounds [howls and whimpers]" to express grief). Photographs of adorable pups and adult dogs emphasize the author's answers. Ages 8-11.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-Crisp, an avowed animal lover and writer of dog stories, has collected questions from kids over the years. Here, she offers answers to some of their more intriguing inquiries. There is no formal arrangement, which in no way detracts from the book's usefulness. The opening query, "Do dogs come from dinosaurs?" seems silly at first. But the answer completely and clearly delves into doggie ancestry. Canine sense of smell is fully explained, and readers learn that some dogs can even sniff out cancer in humans. In all, over 30 dog-related questions are answered. The readable text is set on a generous white background. Questions are posed in larger print and light green fact circles expand on various points. The abundant full-color photographs are appealing. A "Dog Superlatives" page lists the fastest (greyhound), the quietest (basenji), and even the dumbest (Afghan hound), etc. Everything Dog offers plenty of canine facts in a browsable format. A first purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burning dog questions answered here., April 14, 2004
Answer such questions as "Why do dogs like people?", "Why do dogs have cold, wet noses?", and "Can dogs recognize other people in your family by their smell?" Dog lovers will devour the interesting and enlightening information this book presents in one sitting. Has a page listing dog breed superlatives (fastest, smartest, etc.) and extensive resources for further study. Bright and fun book design that is very easy on the eyes. 5.0 out of 5 stars it really is everything dog!, March 5, 2006
A Kid's Review
In this book, it has so many different facts about dogs, i don't even know where to start.
Marty Crisp talks about why dogs like people, how long their memory span is, and what dogs have cold wet noses for, including many other things. i am a big fan of this book. I know a lot about dogs, and their one of my fave animals, but i still learned quite a few good facts about them.
I highly recomend this book to anyone who likes dogs, and also ckeck out Everything Cat and Everything Dolphin too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know About Dogs But Were Afraid to Ask, July 11, 2008
By M. L. Asselin (Bethesda, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My daughter was charmed by Marty Crisp's EVERYTHING DOG, which answers questions the author and journalist has collected from children over the years. These age-old problems include: "Why do some dogs' ears stick up while others flop down?" "Why aren't dogs supposed to eat chocolate?" and "Why do dogs lick us? Do they wish we'd lick them back?"

Crisp's responses are invariably brief and to the point. She strives to have well researched answers that, despite their brevity, are not vague or too general. Crisp's writing is lively, and occasionally even funny, such as when she writes, "Besides the feel of the wind in his fur, there are wonderful smells sliding by your car every time your dog sticks his nose out the window, kind of like smell-a-vision" (p. 55). Not the most elegant sentence, but it made my daughter laugh out loud.

This book is not a guide to raising dogs, but it makes a fun complement to works of that sort. The question-and-(brief) answer format makes for quick reading. I would assess that the book is aimed at 8-to-11-year olds.
