Gr 7-9--More than a study of a single battle, this title looks at causes of the Greek and Persian wars, gives insight into the cultural and philosophical differences that led to continued conflict, and discusses events leading up to Marathon and the effects the battle had on later events and the eventual rise of the Greek Golden Age. The use of primary and secondary sources, including quotes from Herodotus and later historians, and the author's own well-written text give a vivid account of the related aspects of this period. Because of the depth of analysis of Marathon and the Persian Wars, readers will need some background knowledge of Greek civilization to comprehend fully and appreciate this book. Black-and-white illustrations, including photographs of artifacts; reproductions of artwork; maps; topical divisions; and side bars of additional information help to break up the overall bland appearance. Good research material for ambitious report writers.
