Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Ice climbing is exploding in popularity. Advances in equipment and technique have helped make the sport accessible to a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts-and that's where How to Ice Climb! comes into play. Written for beginners and experts alike, How to Ice Climb! is the most complete and up-to-date instructional manual available. Author Craig Luebben, contributing editor to Climbing magazine, starts with the basics such as equipment, safety, water ice technique, then moves on to thoroughly cover mixed climbing, alpine climbing, leading, and descending. Luebben had some of the best ice climbers in the country review the text and make contributions; sidebars and chapters by Joe Josephson, Topher Donahue, and Kennan Harvey help make this book a complete package. Also included is an overview of popular North American ice climbing areas.

From the Back Cover
How do you move efficiently on ice? What are the tricks of the top climbers on mixed routes and precarious hanging icicles? What are the most important considerations when buying ice climbing equipment? How strong is ice protection? What are the greatest hazards in ice climbing, and how do you avoid them? This thorough text answers these questions, and hundreds more about alpine ice, waterfall ice, and mixed climbing. Laced with anecdotes, this easy-to-read text is the most comprehensive resource on modern ice climbing, providing essential information for beginners and experts alike. Craig Luebben has been ice climbing for 20 years. He has authored two previous FalconGuides, including Advanced Rock Climbing (co-authored with John Long), which won the Mountain Exposition category at the 1997 Banff Mountain Book Festival. He works as a contributing editor for Climbing magazine, and lives in Golden, Colorado.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview on Ice Climbing, January 26, 2008
I am an amateur rock climber interested in pursuing ice climbing. This book presents an overview of the rudimentary knowledge necessary to become involved in ice climbing. I now know the necessary equipment, tactics, hidden dangers, and mountaineering concepts which will enable me to go on a trip with an experienced climber and attempt some basic ascents.
